2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumVox - "Donald Trump lies. All the time."
I think this election underscores the failure of modern MSM and the problem of the herd mentality of media outlets pushing all news through a predetermined narrative. Hillary is dishonest. Trump is a straight shooter. Even folks on the left have sometimes accepted the framing of the candidates. Now, at the 11th hour, some media outlets are starting to abandon false equivalency, but it is too late.

When Donald Trump went to Flint, Michigan, the pastor at the Baptist church where he spoke had to defend him from hecklers in the audience: He is a guest of my church, and you will respect him.
The next day, Trump got on the phone with Fox News and lied. He said that the pastor ambushed him while the audience took his side and chanted Let him speak.
Never mind that there were dozens of eyewitnesses. Never mind that reporters were present and had been reporting the story accurately for hours by the time Trump commented. Never mind that one of those reporters had a video camera and the recording makes it extremely obvious that Trumps account of events isnt a misunderstanding but a deliberate lie.
This is the point. Donald Trump lies. All the time.

(17,382 posts)He has no conscience. This is what is really scary. Most folks would be a little uncomfortable, but Trump is not bothered at all.

(9,895 posts)The people who are publicly avowing for Trump simply do not care that he is constantly lying; it doesn't register with them as a negative and that is astounding.
I THOUGHT we were a better country.
I BELIEVED that the Iraq torture and Afghanistan war were mistakes, non-representative of the USA as a people.
I HOPED that the country would recover from 2008-2009 financial crisis and come together, much as the WWII generation had...
I was wrong.
We, the people of the United States, suck.
Not all of us, of course, but as a collective, the mere fact that Trump is not losing the polls by 30+ points nationwide is a damning indictment of the sick nature of our society.
If we were a patient in a reputable hospital, we would be on palliative care in hospice by now, as the prognosis is imminent death and nothing available in the traditional medical arsenal would be deemed prudent.
There should be no way in hell that man who lies as often and as egregiously as Trump (even refusing to acknowledge his own recorded words and images for fuck's sake) could get elected to be county dog catcher in Montana...yet here we sit, on the day of the first presidential debate with nationwide polls saying that damn near HALF OF US are insane bigots and hate mongers.
I am not kidding when I say this whole thing makes me want to vomit.

(13,776 posts)... because they'll be caught in that lie, and their political careers would be finished. Remember when lying to constituents was embarrassing and scandalous? Good times. There was a time when, if a politician had gotten busted for lying about a pastor in public, he would have been shamed for it.
He's just pathologically incapable of telling the truth. He would have looked like a somewhat decent person if, instead of lying about the pastor, he'd said "Guess what, you guys. The pastor at that church was really good to me. I appreciated it very much." But he can't. He just can't. He simply cannot tell the truth. Every word out of his mouth has to be about putting someone else down, even if it would be advantageous to him to tell the truth.
