Charles Pierce: There Is Probably No Way for Hillary Clinton to Win This Debate

Interesting comparison between how the media savaged Gore after his first debate with GWB & how similar treatment of tonight's debate will mean that HRC can't win...even if she totally does.

{snip}
Also on CNN on Monday afternoon, they asked some jamoke or another to give his impression of the respective weaknesses of the two candidates.

The first item on Trump's list was "The Truth."

The first item on HRC's list was "Tends To Get Into The Weeds in policy discussions."

So being a lying sack of hair and being too devoted to the details of public policy are now equal drawbacks to being a presidential candidate. It's nice to know that going forward. It will make life much easier going forward when we nominate a car thief, a cat burglar, or a Bernese Mountain Dog.

2. i've wondered why they don't just literally go for a candidate who's full-on insane.

i mean, think of the ratings!

face it, we're almost there with trump. sociopath, narcissist, overblown sense of net worth,....

why not get someone who's also out and out delusional, as in, sees things that aren't even there? let's declare nuclear war on the little blue tweedlethumps! we'll get 50 share easily!

4. in all honesty, i think it was a mistake to have debates at all.

i think it elevates trump to be seen side-by-side with someone as distinguished and accomplished as hillary.

and she's so well-known. trump needs this far more than hillary.

and it would have been an opportunity to break the cycle of the "usual" and say, hey, something whack-a-doodle is going on here.

for instance, i refuse to debate against trump until he releases his taxes and his medical history. the people have a right to know. until he does this, he's not serious about presidency or respectful of the american people seriously, and it wouldn't be appropriate to debate someone who's not serious.

10. It would've been unprecedented. It'd kill her campaign.

Even Reagan debated Mondale twice, despite leading by 20 points.

I think she needs to do something dramatic to really show that this is not a normal situation. Republicans and right-leaning independents can't just vote for the republican out of habit. They need to be jolted awake.

Trump would call her weak - too scared to debate. People would say she was ducking Trump. Trump would probably hold the debate anyway and have all the free airtime to himself.

Yeah if she refuses without explanation, sure. But that's not what I'm talking about.

Trust me and believe me won't work. Most women want answers, not bullshit. People with decent educations want answers, not bullshit. Minorities want answers, not bullshit. Facts and answers mean that the TV pundits will have to actually know what they are talking about when dissecting what Hillary says.

9. I hope reasonable "undecided" voters* are interested in policy details, too.

*Or, more reasonably, disaffected R-voters who dislike Trump (because the notion that anyone is "undecided" between HRC and Trump is impossible for me to comprehend).
