The Lesson of this Election: We Must Be True to Ourselves

I was thinking about this earlier today. Since the primaries kicked off, I was essentially hoping that this year was going to be like 2008 or 2012 but that wasn't really an honest appraisal of the election. The polls, the issues, the candidates, its a different era. I think in that realization it made sense to me that what this election is about, the lesson that we will carry with us for years, is that we must remain true to ourselves. Too many people want to distort reality and are willfully being roped in by grand promises and easy solutions. Just as long as we give up a little bit of our unique national identity and sell other people out, one person will give us everything we have ever wanted. Its a unique test for us. Bad people have run for president and have even become president but this time 1 person is asking us to give up everything that our country represents, all based on a flashy song and dance routine. The temptation is based on fear, not reality, and to give up, just this once something that we really don't want to. Are we going to give in and wall ourselves off, strangle ourselves, and suffocate because the challenges seem to great or some changes in the word seem foreign and scary? Or do we want to live free and embrace a sometimes uncertain but potentially very bright future? The issue this time around isn't about a recession or a war or family values but whether we can pass a once in a generation test. We cannot be something that we're not. We must not lie to ourselves and claim that somehow, this conman will be different. Do we give into temptation and fear or will we embrace everything that has made us great through the centuries? Will we be true to ourselves?
