2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump surrogates messing up message on Cuba.
There is something very bad here for Trump. The Newsweek story is a serious issue.
First, this morning on The View, Kellyanne Conway admitted money was spent in Cuba.
Just now, on MSNBC, Steve Cortes said "Well, are we really going to hold it against him if he technically broke the law? He only wanted to be ready if things changed so he could build beautiful golf courses, hotels, and create jobs for the Cubans...'
Kate Snow: "So, if he broke the law he shouldn't be held accountable?"
Steve Cortes: "No, I don't think so."
They live on another planet!
On edit: It was also set up so the money spent there looked like charitable giving.

(12,448 posts)but that's okay! Basically, they're just repeating Trump's own words: "That's business," to justify egregious behavior and in this case outright criminality.
We keep saying it, but really: what if Hillary did anything close to this?

(6,336 posts)...I'm sorry, did you say "he wanted to illegally front run the competition who were adhering to the federal ban on dealing with Cuba".
I guess that's Donald's version of winning. The end justifies the means.
What an asshat.

Back in 1974 I never would have predicted that I would ever say something like that.

The GOP has done little but slide into the Abyss since Nixon. Every time I think they can't possibly get worse, they do.

(13,340 posts)So.... the Law and Order candidate broke the law.... more than once. It looks like a habit.
AND.... he gets his crowd all fired up by saying that Hillary should be in jail, despite the fact the FBI concluded there was no prosecutable case.
But El Trumpster "technically" violates the law, but he should not be held accountable. Delicious.

(35,693 posts)I have a traffic court hearing tomorrow morning. One of those, "Yes I admit the infraction, but want to offer the judge an explanation so he hopefully will only fine me and not put any points on my driver's license." Maybe I should try out that explanation. - Nah, better not.

(35,693 posts)Holy shit. These guys are not helping Trump at all. I swear, this is the most incompetent Presidential campaign, top to bottom, in my lifetime. And I am 65 years old.

(375 posts)Not that I think that our laws concerning Cuba are all that smart, even though I despise the Castro tyranny. But here we have a candidate who has broken the law, who is making a big deal about Hillary's (non-)breaking of the law.

(14,083 posts)so they did it anyway, and hid it as charity work. Sounds like a crime to me.

(5,810 posts)The trip was illegal. The law says you had to have permission to go and it had to be for humanitarian or charitable purposes. That trip was neither and they certainly didn't get permission to go. But because they ultimately scrapped plans to invest in Cuba, the surrogates are trying to excuse the technicalities they failed to meet. As if that didn't matter. They made that trip on their own, without proper authorization but we're supposed to forgive him because they decided not to do business in Cuba at that time. Give me a break.
