So I see a pattern at least since the convention

And arguably since the GOP debates. When Trump is under stress because something didn't go his way, and he stresses terribly when he's not getting his way. So his release is to start blasting on Twitter and every time he opens his mouth. If his target fights back he gets madder. And it's a cycle. This is his weakness. This is what Hillary will use for the next month. He will beat himself.

He'd rather fight and sweat the little insults instead of ignoring them. Khan was an early example of this.
