2016 Postmortem

Watching MSNBC in Nevada interviewing young voters.
They will vote to legalize pot, won't vote for Hillary, and may vote for Johnson.
Hillary has stated she would move pot from Shedule 1 drug list
Johnson is supported by the Kochs and in all reality will never affect any issue on the planet

With the stakes so high I thought for sure these kids were our hope for a brighter future.

(9,117 posts)We thought we were going to change the world for the better, and our peers went and voted for the baggers.

(5,737 posts)Mom took us to church, and we learned religion there. We didn't need it at our public school. Our parents stayed involved in our school lives and encouraged all to participate in school activities, like band and sports. Those boomer baggers you referenced? Their parents did not care. They sent them to school because they had to and that was the only contact they had with their schools. The boys dropped out at 16, farted around until they were 18, then went to work where their fathers worked. The girls dropped out of school and got married as soon as they could and started popping out kids.

(58,785 posts)from the beginning, and then environment works on them. I knew our son was basically liberal and our daughter basically moderately conservative when they were in elementary school.
In any case, THAT's why "millennials" have very different ideas of what a better world should be and a big reason why they're not rushing in large numbers to support Hillary.
Btw, consistently about 6 people vote for every 4 who do not. We've always thought more education caused people to vote in greater numbers. Yet these days, as more people are continuing education beyond high school, the rates of engagement are not increasing with them.
Studies are showing that it may not be education, per se, that causes greater engagement, but rather that the kind of people who vote have been more inclined to further their education..
But unlike the past when so many skills were learned on the job, these days many students are attending college to "learn a trade" as entree to the middle class, not to further their academic education. The general ed classes are more something they have to get behind them than pleasures that develop their interest in more and more learning. So, the overall "thirst for knowledge" among student bodies has dropped, and that also may be a significant contributor to the apathy being reported on campuses. More students are just the don't-vote kind.
That and two old people running, one a dysfunctional baboon and the other looking and sounding more like the grandmothers who told them they had to go to college and stay away from drugs than an exciting inspirational leader for the future. It takes ranging intelligence for the mind to move beyond adolescent groupthink.

(5,737 posts)When you've been between the eyes with the hammer of reality, ones vision of the real world changes. It is a tough world and the sooner a person can learn to live in that world, the better off they will be. Johnson has exposed himself as a typical Libertarian - all about me and my happiness.

I don't judge ALL millennials by the few that the M$M tries to convince us will never vote for Hillary.

(15,368 posts)they were never true Bernie supporters. Bernie did not spew a "rabid ideology" akin to the Trump fold. They would never under any circumstances support Hillary.
Write them off!

That is simply crazy considering all that is at stake in this election.

(27,803 posts)It's not exactly a tactic to build support (OTOH, I am really sick of the "blame the boomers" meme - most of the policies that led to wealth inequality today were from Reagan, who was certainly not a boomer).

(27,803 posts)just went to a work thing that talked about discrimination in the workplace, and ageism is being cited more and more - it's the first time there have been four generations robustly represented in the workplace, so obviously adjustments are needed.

(2,542 posts)They had a stable of 6-8 (white, male) authors at any given moment repeating the dishonesty about "super-predators" and calling her a "war hawk" and smearing her with innuendo about Wall Street. Now they're worried? Now they're concerned?
If Trump is the Frankenstein the GOP created, these Millennial trolls are the fringe left's legacy. And Salon volunteered as a willing mouthpiece for that.
Apparently the concept of sanity has a center-left bias this year.

(30,481 posts)The age group currently described as millennials aren't that much different from the same age group over the past couple of decades. There is nothing special about said age group outside of the fact they don't vote in numbers, are just forming their worldview, and are the easiest to move from corner to corner. That is not a negative comment on them. It is currently and historically accurate. Fact is a majority of those who do vote in said group will go for the Democrat.

(5,697 posts)At least Trump voters, as dumb and misguided as they are, genuinely believe they're doing this country a service by electing the Cheeto. The BoB crowd knows how horrible and disastrous Trump would be for this country and still chooses to try and deliberately fuck us all by voting for Trump or protest voting for a third party, just to "send a message". They don't realize that not everyone is in the privileged position they are to ride out a Trump presidency, and that not everyone has mommy and daddy's basement to fall back on if Trump wins and SHTF.

(524 posts)But I know it's a lost cause. He's not a millennial, he's late 40s/white/gay.
The other half of the image said something terrible about Trump. He previously said he's voting for Stein.
I don't want to vote shame people. We have the freedom to vote for who we want, and that's important to preserve, but I really don't understand how someone bothers going to the voting booth to throw the vote into a black hole. If I hated them both that much, I'd just stay home.
I want to ask him when was the last time we had a president that he did NOT think was a war criminal. They all use the military. I would guess he impugns her over a senate vote or something she did as SS. *sigh*

(8,171 posts)would not vote for a loser candidate. One smokes weed, the other doesn't. Shouldn't have an effect in MA anyways since we have recreational mj on the ballot this year.
Now my brother, who is 51, socially liberal, economically conservative and who normally votes R will be voting for Johnson. I'm pretty sure he doesn't smoke weed though. I am just thankful he is not voting Trump.
