Lautenberg: Booker may need 'spanking'

New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg says Newark Mayor Cory Booker may need a “spanking” for being “disrespectful” to the long-serving lawmaker by openly making a play for his seat in 2014.

In his first public comments about Booker’s plans to run, Lautenberg, who’s turning 89, didn’t make clear whether he plans to run again when his seat is up next year. Lautenberg made his remarks in a brief interview posted on Philly.com.

When asked about one of the senator’s senior aides describing Booker as “disrespectful” for filing papers before Lautenberg has announced his own decision, the senator quipped: “I have four children, I love each one of them. I can’t tell you that one of them wasn’t occasionally disrespectful, so I gave them a spanking and everything was OK.”

But he added, “I’ve got a lot of work to do yet, serious things and we pride ourselves (in) my office and my team (on) getting things done. That’s the focus. I’m not thinking about the politics right now.”

Yesterday, Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker (D) attacked the Obama campaign for making an issue of Mitt Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital during an appearance on Meet the Press. While the progressive leader later backed off the criticisms, Republicans have been quick to highlight his comments as an attack against the idea that scrutiny of Mitt Romney’s record as a businessman is fair game.
A ThinkProgress examination of New Jersey campaign finance records for Booker’s first run for Mayor — back in 2002 — suggests a possible reason for his unease with attacks on Bain Capital and venture capital. They were among his earliest and most generous backers.
Contributions to his 2002 campaign from venture capitalists, investors, and big Wall Street bankers brought him more than $115,000 for his 2002 campaign. Among those contributing to his campaign were John Connaughton ($2,000), Steve Pagliuca ($2,200), Jonathan Lavine ($1,000) — all of Bain Capital. While the forms are not totally clear, it appears the campaign raised less than $800,000 total, making this a significant percentage

5. Bob Torrecelli is the reason why Lautenberg is causing so much problems.

Torricelli-D had a controversial tenure in the US Senate from 2000 to 2002- he was about to lose re-election in 2002 to Doug Forrester-R, Democrats needed to win that seat to retain control of the US Senate.
Torrecelli-D was forced to dropout and Lautenberg-D became the replacement nominee-he wins the 2002 NJ US Senate Race by a 10 point margin.
Lautenberg-D could have retired again in 2008 and allow Pallone-D to run for that seat.

6. Well putting aside who the candidate is

and whether or not you like Booker (I don't have a strong opinion either way). Anyone has right to run, that doesn't mean they will win. I have no idea where people get off like this is the USSR or China and the candidate has to be approved much less by an incumbent. If Booker wants to run then Lautenberg should beat him in the primary.

8. In 1974, one of my heroes-J William Fullbright lost his senate seat to Dale Bumpers.....who went on

to a distinguished senate career for Arkansas. Both were great men, but time passes and careers end. If New Jersey wants to keep Senator Lautenburg then I salute them. If they choose to replace him with Senator Booker, then thats their choice. Both men have their hearts and heads in the right place. Its up to the citizens of the state and I'll live with their choice.

As a resident of Mississippi, I could only dream of being able to choose between two good candidates. That will never happen in my lifetime again here.

10. Lautenberg-D winning re-election results in a 2016 or 2018 Special Election.

Lautenberg wins re-election in 2014, during the middle of his term, he dies. If he dies before 1/19/2018- Then a Republican caretaker like former NJ Governor Whitman would be appointed to the seat until the 11/2018 Special Election. US Rep Frank Pallone becomes the Democratic nominee in the 2018 Special Election.
If Lautenberg dies after 1/19/2018- a Democrat will be appointed to replace Lautenberg by the New Democratic Governor.

He is in good health. He could easily live to 96.
