About that idiot who wants to be armed in case five intruders break into her house.

FIVE intruders? Really?

How many times has this happened?

How these instances compare stadistically to women being murdered with a weapon kept in the home used by a SO, husband, or even an intruder?

I wish someone had told her that

Just mind boggling

I think the "five intruders" is a stupid argument for gun rights but have you ever heard of "home invasions"? They are rare, yes, that is why I say it is a stupid argument, but they do happen, and you can't assume that the victim "deserves it."

so I don't know the story.

And I don't know where you or she lives, but in the Atlanta metro area, it just is not uncommon for a home invasion to have three or more bad guys.

And those being robbed ARE NOT drug dealers. They are jewelry store owners, diamond couriers and coin dealers, or vending machine owners with a lot of cash on hand.

When I was a lowly barista, I took the day's cash directly to a bank across the street immediately after closing.

I would think diamond couriers practice greater equal or greater discipline regarding taking valuables or cash home.

what that trumped up hearing should have did. The pundits wouldn't even let you hear the questiioning but from the little bit I did hear, they only got softball questions. I thought all the examples by the gun nuts were just pathetic. The first pathetic diatribe was a rant from Senator Grassley about mental illness and video games. His peers just let him rant on without challenging his pathetic logic. It was an insult to anybody that have half an education. ODonnell should have been on the panel.

First, for those of you who weren't able to follow the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on gun violence, the OP is referring to testimony by Gayle Trotter, who is with the Richard Mellon Scaife-financed Independent Women's Forum (See link below).

To cut to the chase here, Trotter basically sang the praises of the AR-15 rifle, which was of course used to kill 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th, 2012. The owner of the gun, Nancy Lanza, was also shot multiple times.

She used as justification for her position the image of a young mother using the rifle to protect her terrified babies from three, four, or five attackers. But of course the AR-15 was the means of Nancy Lanza's death, not her rescue, and a source of terror for the faculty and children at Sandy Hook.

[ur]http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/01/how-nra-uses-women-human-shields/61588/

Women like the AR-15 because "they're light, they're easy to hold, and most importantly, their appearance," Trotter said. The rifle is intimidating, she said, and then appeared to riff on a hypothetical home invasion in which one would be necessary. "Three, four, five violent intruders in her home -- with her children screaming in the background -- the peace of mind that comes with a scary looking gun…gives her more courage when she's fighting hardened, violent criminals." Trotter said. "I speak on behalf of millions of american women who urge you to defend our Second Amendment right to choose to defend ourselves."

The Independent Women's Forum:

http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/officials-adam-lanza-shot-way-into-sandy-hook-elementary-1.4339051

But Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance said he was confident questions about the second-worst school shooting in the United States would ultimately be answered.

He said all of the victims at the school, including 20 first-graders and six adults, were shot with a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle and that "numerous" magazines were emptied at the scene. Lanza, a quiet young man described as developmentally disabled and who struggled socially, had hundreds of bullets that went unused, Vance said.

"There was a lot of ammo, a lot of clips," he said. "Certainly a lot of lives were potentially saved" by first responders approaching the school.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/16/nancy-lanza-mother-of-gunman-private-home-life_n_2313027.html

All three of the guns that Adam Lanza carried into Sandy Hook Elementary were owned and registered by his mother – a pair of handguns and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, his primary weapon.

(SNIP)

Marsha Lanza told the Chicago Sun-Times that Nancy Lanza wanted guns for protection. "She prepared for the worst," Marsha Lanza told the newspaper. "I didn't know that they (the guns) would be used on her."

Guns were her hobby," Dan Holmes, who got to know Lanza while doing landscaping work for her, told The Washington Post. "She told me she liked the single-mindedness of shooting."

I think many worked agree that is not going to happen.
Yes it is justified to be worried about the probability of a home invasion happening that is normal, even wanting to get a gun to defend yourself from the possibility is normal if it is a frequent occurrence in your area. This woman is way past normal or healthy in her paranoia
With that being said a shot gun would be more then adequate and easier to use in an home invasion situation then a AR15, AK or even a handgun. Things would happen so fast for most people the invaders would take the AR/AK from you before you even fired a single shot.
We as a people really need to amend the second, bring it up to date so to speak, if we want a real solution. Nobody wants to take away hunting and target guns; I don’t think most people have a problem with pump and bolt action guns either but we need to keep guns away from those that should not own them and regulate everyone that owns a gun.

luna: About that idiot who wants to be armed in case five intruders break into her house

.. just another specious gunnut reason to justify their extremes, wayne's world. She's turning the scene into a rambo movie, like women in combat, Shooting Mom-bos.
With 5 screaming children in the background, wouldn't a normal mother check to see what they're screaming about? if the invaders are already in the 'living room' and the children are screaming, it would not be wise to start shooting where if they return fire they might hit the kids, or ricochets go wild from all guns.
.. if kids are in a bedroom or removed, a normal mother would check on them after complying with the invaders, the presumption should be that they just want money or valuables, not killing.
If they're intent on killing 5 to one odds is a losing scenario for the mother, even armed with an automatic.

Compliance is the better policy in this, burglar robbers are intent on just money & goods 99% the time, pretty good odds of survial if you comply, & not really improved that much if you become a shooting mombo.

somebody wrote: With that being said a shot gun would be more then adequate and easier to use in an home invasion situation then a AR15, AK or even a handgun. Things would happen so fast for most people the invaders would take the AR/AK from you before you even fired a single shot.

Concur; If mom was lucky they would take it before she fired a shot, cause if she hit or killed one of them, the reprisal would likely be the worse case scenario, leaving the kids mom-less.
Compliance is not a bad word, & would work 99 times of 100.
Start blasting away, just to save a tv set or stereo? Teach the kids to jump out the windows & run for help, or hide in the attic.

She may or may not believe a word she said; she's spouting the paranoia the NRA chooses to spread.

The Independent Womens Forum is just another rightwing organization, supported by the usual array of rightwing sponsors including the Sarah Scaife and Richard Mellon Scaife foundations (remember the Arkansas Project?) and she works for them.

See http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Independent_Women%27s_Forum

Some of their other noble efforts include killing the Violence Against Women Act and banning climate change science in schools.

They were founded in 1992, and the Independent Women's Forum grew out of the ad hoc group, Women for Judge Thomas.

Her testimony was even ravaged by comments on their own website article about the Congressional hearing and Lawrence O'Donnell's confrontation. http://www.iwf.org/blog/2790441/Shut-Up,-They-Explained

So she doesn't speak for women or for children. I'm sure she was paid handsomely for looking stupid.
