Why did all of these Tea Party Groups want a government hand out? Ie government money!

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) on Tuesday questioned why tea party groups were seeking to be subsidized by the government.

At a House hearing on IRS misconduct, McDermott acknowledged the federal tax agency had inappropriately used political criteria to locate nonprofit applications that needed extra review.

“But as I listen to this discussion, I’d like to remind everyone what we are talking about here,” he continued. “None of your organizations were kept from organizing or silenced. We are talking about whether or not the American taxpayers would subsidize your work. We are talking about a tax break.”

does it say that people have a "right" to tax-exempt status anyway? in their made-up one perhaps?

nobody is entitled to tax exempt status (and the IRS has the prerogative to question the tax exempt status of questionable groups and make them prove that they are eligible under the law- to the extent that the law is clear on the matter, which, in this case, it is not) AFAIK

It's really a shame political charity groups take this limited grant money away from real charities who have a hard time even getting funds and donations.

Where have these groups got government grants? Do you have a link? They get money from donors who wish to further their goals.

you can do a search?.. "Gov. grants" and see how you can apply for your non-profit or charity group.

"Gov grants"

http://www.google.com/#gs_rn=15&gs_ri=psy-ab&suggest=p&cp=6&gs_id=q&xhr=t&q=Gov+grants&es_nrs=true&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=Gov+gr&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47380653,d.aWM&fp=47927edf2ec5f5c8&biw=1088&bih=540

far as these groups, if they are a state or federal 'non-profit' or tax-free, or public service charity- they have to post their paperwork somewhere, call them and ask for their financial information.

It shouldn't be any different when the IRS has triggers set up in their audits to alert them of possible issues.

... there's no handout. It's a tax break. Money they already have that they don't have to pay. The distinction is clear.

McDermott nailed it, but his comments have been reframed by the OP.

people don't mind groups like the Red Cross, food banks, homeless shelters, and Churches get a local tax pass, but come on America..these are political groups, political 'clubs' and they should pay their taxes.

Where do they think that the money for roads that they drive on comes from? Where do they think that money for the police and fire departments come from? It would be nice if they could do a thought experiment sometime about what a world without taxes would actually look like. I'm not sure that, if they thought about it hard enough, they would like it much IMHO but then again, they don't *think* much either.........

Republicans LIKE big government- provided that it serves and benefits THEM, their donors, their "base", their future electoral prospects.

They HATE big government when it serves and benefits anybody OTHER than them, their donors, their "base", their future electoral prospects, etc.
