Bill Maher started his New Rule with a quote from a Bob Dole interview. Dole said the Republican Party had become a party of idea free ideologues who obstructed too much. He also stated that Ronald Reagan himself could not have made it as a Republican. Bill Maher took exception to that statement. In fact Maher laid out a pretty detail factual observation that would lead anyone to come to the conclusion that in fact Reagan was pretty much the pre-incarnation of the Tea Party.

(4,309 posts)I was in college during the Reagan Administration and I remember thinking of him as a saber rattling, small-minded, mean-spirited bigot. My opinion has never changed. That he remains a hero to the right wing speaks volumes.

(5,275 posts)The top marginal tax rate was 91 or 92 % every year under Eisenhower, JFK lowered it a bit and it was in the 60-75% range or so, through LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and Carter. R's and D's. Then we get ex B actor Ronnie, who slashes it by about half. Soon we get his snarky derisive talk about government being there to help. He started us down the road to our shameful income inequality - sadly it continues to get worse due to big money interests enabled even more by the ridiculous "Citizens United" decision.
Not that "neo" dems haven't had a hand in where we are, with their zeal for free trade and all.

Teddy Kennedy, too liberal. They wanted the Gipper, Dutch, St Ronnie the Rapmaster.
