Obama's Approval Rating Slides

I'm disappointed about Obama's falling approval ratings. Obviously it's directly tied to the IRS and the NSA issues which have been on the headlines for the last month or so. While I think the NSA surveillance is a neutral issue (since Republicans are the ones who strongly supported the program and they're looking like hypocrites now in opposing it simply because a Democrat is doing it), I feel that Obama should have taken swifter and more decisive action with the IRS. He should have immediately found out who advocated singling out the conservative groups and promptly fired them. Then he should have gone on TV and publicly stated that all political action groups, regardless of their affiliations, which claim tax exemptions WILL continue to be scrutinized to make sure they are not cheating the system.

I do feel that Pres. Obama is a bit "aloof" as to stuff that's going on. I realize he may be trying to stay above the fray (a strategy that Reagan used) but people are starting to perceive that Obama is either indifferent to what's going on or he simply doesn't have a clue as to what's going on. Obama isn't Reagan, in that he's not a professional actor who can just smile and shrug it off and people are satisfied with that. He needs to take steps so that he's perceived the caring leader whom Americans can trust.

When we have coast-to-coast mandatory vaginal ultrasounds, we will finally be free of intrusive government.

I suggest we let his political people worry about that.

7. That's a pretty simple question to answer

Since mid-terms can often boil down to whether one can tar an incumbent of the same party as the president with the same brush.

The Republicans are great at stuff like that - "He promised to close Guantanamo, and broke his promise!" while preventing that from happening.

9. Then again

The Republicans are doing stupid stuff that alienates women, minorities and the sane. Thus they have trouble even if Obama gets blown by all Miss America contestants on the Whitehouse lawn of the 4th of July. Honestly, that's how far the Republicans have painted themselves into a corner.

some of us don't. Personally I think he works a lot in the background but that's just me. Not to fret, he'll be back up in no time..

6. Rightly so

If I were polled today, you can count me among those that would disapprove of his performance. Sorry, but I didn't choke on tear gas and pepper spray during the anti-Iraq War protests of 2003 to just just line up and cheer for a president who continues on in Bush's fascist policies. I'm tired of Democrats being wimps. If they want my support, they have to earn it.

than they were for him for pretty much all of 2011 after the Dems got wiped out of the House and replaced with a bunch of anarchic teabaggers

He will bounce back after while IMHO. I'm not planning on worrying too much until the Republicans' approval gets close to being higher than his and/or Democrats' approval rating.

24. That's a silly answer

We have a midterm election which often turn on how closely the pubs can tie the candidates to an unpopular President. Unless you don't think Congress is important, the President's approval rating is a very important barometer.

17. The media will get caught up in some new shinny object.

And off they'll go.

The reason the poll numbers move at all is because those who pay almost no attention to politics are influenced not by the actual issues, but by the tone in the media. And so those folks say "What, people are upset with Obama ... ummm ... me too."

And then it blows over and we get a new jobs report, and its pretty good, and so those same folks, still not really paying attention get a sense of the good news and say "People seem happy with Obama's handling of the economy ... and so am I".

Every summer we go through this. Politics comes to a near halt, and the media needs something to talk about. So expect continued hyperventilating to continue for a bit, but also expect the topic DU JOUR to change.

As for the "slide" it's not as bad as cnn would have you believe.

Jane @yeswecanjane

CNN's Poll about Pres. O decline was wrong!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/17/barack-obama-cnn-poll_n_3456322.html No one ever investigated why pollsters are getting it wrong and Who pays $ POLLSTER

UPDATE: CNN Poll Exaggerates Obama Approval Decline

Obama's approval rating has declined since May but not nearly as much as implied by a new CNN poll. Americans are just as opposed to military aid to the Syrian rebels now as they were before Friday.

If we start to force things through that may help. There are still too many potential holdouts and my understanding is they only have one more shot at it.

28. The ratings weren't affected by the IRS thing

however the NSA debacle has more of an effect. The Republicans are happy. We even have Dick Cheeny coming out in support of the NSA eavesdropping. Of course it was GW Bush and Cheney who signed the surveillance in 2002.

People here in the USA are very influenced by the media. No one batted an eyelid in 2002.

31. According to a poll they showed on Rev. Al's show today,

Obama's numbers have actually remained unchanged, for the most part. And there was another thread in GD that elaborated on how CNN exaggerated Obama's approval decline. Like Rev. Al said, these polls are nothing to get too worked up about either way. All they are is a snap shot for the bigger picture. Besides, it's not as if Obama will or can run for re-election again in 2016, so they don't really matter at this point, except for maybe painting a picture regarding Democratic enthusiasm in 2014.
