Eric Cantor: DREAMers Shouldn't Be 'Kids Without A Country'

I read the whole article on the link below and the first thing that popped into my mind afterwards was: "Wow, did Cantor stay out in the sun too long?"
because it sure doesn't sound like him.

Eric Cantor: DREAMers Shouldn't Be 'Kids Without A Country'

"I hope strongly that the kids who are brought here as minors because their parents brought them -- for no other reason -- and they find themselves here in a country that says they don't belong," Cantor said.

"Certainly we ought to have the compassion to say these kids shouldn't be kids without a country, and we ought to allow them the life that they deserve."

Cantor first said in February that he believes the children of undocumented immigrants should have a pathway to citizenship, though he had voted against the DREAM Act three years prior.

Cantor also took a jab at the idea of "self-deportation" on Saturday, a phrase recently popularized by Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential primaries.

"I can tell you, I don't think many people would ever say -- although some have -- that you're going to deport 11 or 12 million people, or that they're going to self-deport," Cantor said. "That's just not happening."

efforts by Rethug leadership (at least among those not clearly crazy) to start their fictious 'rebranding' of the Rethuglican party and its 'outreach' to Latins. Remember that the only intent is to appear to be sympathetic to the plight of millions of undocumented aliens - not actually do anything to resolve it. Cantor's fine speech notwithstanding, betcha he votes against any House version that ever comes up for a vote.

and they'll probably blame President Obama for its failure as well. "That darned President Obama! He didn't invite us over to the WH enough! He didn't wine and dine us enough!"

I'm actually surprised that Rubio didn't bail. I figured that he would pull the rug out from under the whole effort eventually.

his own bill because it wasn't tough enough on border security - but he got caught at it and had to go along with it after all. Result - he's seriously damaged goods among the tea crazies.

plus, he said that he would bolt if there were any protections for LGBT individuals included. Immigration reform ultimately passed and I suppose he is due some credit for his efforts, however, he wound up looking idiotic during most of the process. I have little optimism about the House passing anything anytime soon but let's just wait and see..............

What I don't get about this whole process is that conservative right-wingers are yelling "amnesty" yet there are so many rules, restrictions, caveats, and a fairly significant waiting period in place that I don't know how this bill is just as bad as (or worse than) simply legalizing everybody here immediately. If anything, this bill is perhaps too restrictive IMHO and it kicks the can way down the road for many undocumented immigrants and the spending for "border security" seems excessive (and has been described as such by most supporters of immigration reform) but it's a start if nothing else towards recognizing the need to provide the people already living here already a realistic way to remain here and become legalized citizens.

a rational, thinking adult. But with the Repukes the immigration battle is between the 'just crazies' and the 'crazy as a shit-house rat' category of 'conseratives. The 'just crazies' hate the idea of immigration reform but are astue enough to read the polls and understand that they can't openly oppose immigration reform - part of their new "rebranding strategy". But they load the bill up with so many poison pills that, even if it passes it's almost useless. However their "shit-house rat" brethren are idological 'purists', who demand that we round up all those damned furriners and throw them out. The Repukes in the Senate (at least a majority right now) are in the "just crazy" group while the mouth-breathers in the House are almost entirely shit-house rat type crazy.
