2016 Postmortem

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/24/one-man-obamacare-nightmare/My comments: there is no fucking way this is true. They have to be making this shit up.
On edit: how the hell do we combat it when the fucking "news" people just make stuff up? These people have no shame.
Here is an excerpt of this crap.
"When I saw the letter when I came home from work," Andy said, describing the large red wording on the envelope from his insurance carrier, "

It had stunning news. Insurance for the Mangiones and their two boys, which they bought on the individual market, was going to almost triple in 2014 --- from $333 a month to $965.
The insurance carrier made it clear the increase was in order to be compliant with the new health care law.
"This isn't a Cadillac plan, this isn't even a silver plan," Mangione said, referring to higher levels of coverage under ObamaCare.

(62,722 posts)I simply don't believe that. Insurance for a family under a company group man runs us at least $500/month.
Maybe their insurance company didn't cover anyone with any propensity to get sick.
The other possibility is that they are a high income family, who will pay more.

(8,492 posts)There are no answers from the insurance companies. They're using scare tactics to get people to sign now at their current 'lower' rates or face an increase. Oddly enough, the increase doesn't go into effect for 12 months, but they need to reply before Oct. 1st...when the ACA goes into effect. There doesn't seem to be a legitimate reason for the 'drop dead' date.
If I was forced to guess their motives, I'd say the insurance companies are afraid that clients will leave once they realize they can get cheaper insurance on the exchange (or other options). Scaring the crap out of the clients will force them to sign up for something they may not need for a full 12 month policy.
If I had a family (and insurance) I'd tell them to shove it. There will be less expensive options short term and I'm confident even more options as people become more comfortable with the ACA.

(39 posts)Fox conveniently forgot to mention that Mr Mangione is a health insurance lobbyist, as well as a former employee at Humana, Pfizer, and Invacare. The story about his health care increase is on AMAC's homepage.

You're right, they have no shame.

(18,887 posts)If, after the ACA actually starts the cost is the same, simply drop that company and choose a cheaper one.
The ACA guarantees competition because your choice of companies and price of coverage isn't limited by your medical history anymore.
Companies that overcharge will lose customers.
(Though the ACA also limits overcharging so I'll bet his bill will drop as soon as the law takes effect. )
This might be some kind of gouging to grab as much as they can before the new law limits them.
Edit:
I just read the above post stating that the guy is a Humana lobbyist.
Geez what sleaze.
