Former President Bill Clinton may apologize publicly to Hillary Clinton and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky for the 1998 affair that nearly derailed his presidency.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports the former president may apologize in an effort to help his wifes potential 2016 White House run.
The rationale? To fend off critics of his wife Hillary who blame her for protecting a powerful husband, Michael Sneed of the Sun-Times wrote.

(69 posts)It was a horrible mistake. Clinton paid his dues and, seemingly, has been working hard to make amends through philanthropic work.
Don't let their inane praddle distract....

(22,000 posts)The whole thing would distract from the campaigns going on and make the less effective surrogates. It doesn't make sense.

(59,498 posts)Also consider that it happened nearly 20 years ago. The apologies should have happened at least by 2000 when he left office - and they should have been sincere, honest and PRIVATE. I don't know if he apologized to both women.
A PUBLIC apology this much later - "to fend off critics" - is ridiculous - especially to his wife. It is pretty clear they dealt with it years ago. If anything, the only public apology needed was the one given in August 1999 when he confessed to the nation. That was timely and addressed to the country - rather than the closest person to him and another person to whom he could have written an apology for his actions. (yes I know they were both in the wrong, but that does not preclude apologizing for his part.)
There is no way the critics would then suddenly forgive Bill Clinton never to mention Monica again.

And if we're lucky it may be the last time we hear from any of the three of them.

(5 posts)The majority of the country didn't care in 1998 when it was revealed, why would they care now, and the very few people that cared about it then were people that hated Bill and Hillary from the start.

(15,185 posts)It wasn't news in '98. It isn't now. Slow news week? No more breaking news on that missing plane, eh CNN? Or more like the media carrying the water for the GOP again?
Pathetic. No Bill should not dignify such garbage. In fact there is nothing to respond to. It was a family affair. They clearly have got over it and look happy and stable.
As far as I'm concerned, that's the end of it.

(30,247 posts)It sounds like something out of the National Enquirer. There's no political advantage to apologizing at this point in time. Besides, didn't he already apologize back in the 90s?
