2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary Clinton's Immigration Misstep
We already knew the immigration issue was a tough one for Republicans. They have a hard time opposing legal status for the undocumented without sounding anti-Hispanic. They insist their leaders take loyalty oaths to oppose an amnesty, alienating them from the mainstream. They have to balance supporting a business community that wants more immigration with coddling a nativist wing that wants less.
Yet, recent events along the U.S.-Mexico border show that immigration also trips up Democrats. Consider the trouble it's causing Hillary Clinton. As the presumptive 2016 presidential candidate learned recently, navigating these choppy waters is not child's play.
In the last nine months, about 47,000 unaccompanied children and teenagers have come across the border. About three-fourths are from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
Many Americans think the border kids are being pushed north by their parents. But many of the children are being pulled by parents who already live here. They were sent by grandparents, aunts, uncles. Here in the United States, families are being reunited.
Yet Clinton glibly said during a recent CNN town hall that these young people should be sent back because we have to send a clear message: Just because your child gets across the border, that doesn't mean the child gets to stay.

Somehow, this cold-hearted comment doesn't fit in with either her dewy-eyed grandma-to-be spin or the Clinton Foundation's "noble" commitment to poor children.
Scene from a HRC presidency: Come sit on Grandma's lap and she'll tell you how many non-white kids who risked their lives to get into the US she deported today.

(1,365 posts)I don't trust her. She ran a poor campaign in 08. She was alright as Secretary of State. I want to see a woman president. I do not want another republican president. I will vote for her if I have to, but I don't like her.

(7,365 posts)The Democrats look silly sometimes and you've already seen it on this board where they got their black guy in 2008, we'll get our women in 2016 and then it will be time for a latino in 2024. It's pathetic.
I would like a President that does good work, is honest, isn't beholden to the corporate masters, will fight for justice all around the world, will reduce the American war machine.

(30,247 posts)Should the US encourage Central Americans to send their children unaccompanied across a border that has often killed adults? Is the US obligated to house, feed, provide medical care ad infinitum for every person that is crossing the border illegally? Some of you should check how Mexicans treat their illegal aliens, it makes our system seem kind by comparison.
I don't know what the solution is, but encouraging children to be sent here alone is not one of them.
