Not Ready for Clinton, Democrats Adopt Tea Party Tactics

By Annie Linskey Jul 18, 2014 11:41 AM ET

The official agenda at a Detroit gathering of thousands of Democrats was to organize for November’s congressional elections. Unofficially, they were plotting to find a primary candidate to take on Hillary Clinton.

The offenses committed by the frontrunner for the party’s 2016 presidential nomination range from cozying up to corporate interests and being soft on Wall Street to failing to defend the undocumented children crossing the U.S. southern border.

These activists, attending the Netroots Nation conference, are taking organizing cues from the small-government Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. They are trying to recruit challengers to push the debate in their direction and infiltrating party hierarchies in early presidential primary states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.

“There is a battle for the soul of the Democratic Party,” said Adam Green, a co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a Washington-based group aligned with Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren. “There’s a rising populist tide in America.”

Unlike the Republicans, the power struggle inside the Democratic Party has remained largely below the surface because the rebellious wing hasn’t been able to recruit a high-profile politician to lead their cause.

its designed to put fissures into the Democratic Party. Populists spout like Paulistia's, and baggers. Waren maybe popular, but it takes the party not a few to win an election.

I'm all for primary challenges in 2016. But I'm more concerned about 2014 right now.

Didn't read the entire article, and it sounds like the text might not be as much alarmist bullshit as the headline, but still. I'd call it a debate in the Democratic party about it's priorities, which is the way it should be.

Yes, let's fight amongst ourselves! Let's hand 2016 to Ayn Rand Paul or Ted Canuck Cruz!

A vote for Hillary is a vote for the one percent. A vote for Hillary is a vote for the establishment. A vote for Hillary is a vote for the military complex. A vote for Hillary is a vote for higher middle class taxes. A vote for Hillary is a vote for serfdom. #ABC (anyone but Clinton)

O'Malley stood in for her at several of her campaign events. I really like the way he backed Kerry over Bush. Was outspoken and very correct about how bad Bush would be for America! He seems like he did a very good job as Mayor and Governor. Who knows he may be the D person running for President in 2016.

Not afraid to express his views either, I admire that about Martin O'Malley.

"O'Malley voiced his support for a bill considered by the General Assembly to legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland. O'Malley, a Catholic, was urged by the Archbishop of Baltimore Edwin O'Brien not to support the bill in a private letter sent two days before O'Malley voiced his support.[51] "I am well aware that the recent events in New York have intensified pressure on you to lend your active support to legislation to redefine marriage," O'Brien wrote. "As advocates for the truths we are compelled to uphold, we speak with equal intensity and urgency in opposition to your promoting a goal that so deeply conflicts with your faith, not to mention the best interests of our society."[51] O'Malley responded,

"I do not presume, nor would I ever presume as Governor, to question or infringe upon your freedom to define, to preach about, and to administer the sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. But on the public issue of granting equal civil marital rights to same-sex couples, you and I disagree." [51]

The governor worked hard to balance the budget of Maryland. Although he didn't succeed, the middle class were given a break. We all know that is long overdue in this country. The guy is also tough on crime. He'll work tirelessly to take guns away from criminals while protecting the rights of legal owners. There's many more reasons to back the guy, but I'm about to head out the door for some sun and fun. Have a good weekend and back anyone but Hillary.

I'm not ever going to promote, 'anyone but Hillary'. I like her and the Clinton Foundations private sector work. Even O'Malley backed her , same as she would/will back any D running for President in 2016.

Or a well paid Republican-tea party, "pep talker" like Herman Cain to pretend to run for President.

the "organizational cues" of teabaggers, but fails to mention the organizational techniques were pioneered by community organizers including ironically enough Saul Alinsky. The inference is that those who intend to rock the inevitability boat are teabaggers, but they are more accurately known as engaged and determined Democrats.
