One of the Republican governors who was elected last November with the help of Gov. Chris Christie has a funny way of showing his thanks.
In a speech to the Illinois farm bureau last week newly-elected Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner noted that his state has the highest property taxes in America "other than New Jersey. I don't want to compete with New Jersey on anything, especially that. That's a disaster," according to a report in the Springfield, Ill., State Journal-Register.
"New Jersey is lost," Rauner said. "They're going down the drain, and they ain't turning it around."
Christie spent a third of last year out of state fundraising for GOP candidates as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. He visited Illinois eight times, supplying $10 million in RGA funds to help get Rauner elected.
New Jersey does have the highest property taxes in the nation. However, Christie's proposed $33.8 billion budget, introduced a day before Rauner's remarks last week, would provide a 5.2 percent increase for property tax relief over the previous fiscal year, as well as $1.1 billion in direct property taxpayer relief programs.

(60,536 posts)he either revealed the thinking within upper and inner GOP circles regarding Christie's tenure or, Christie confided in him about the condition of New Jersey...and Christie knows the condition of NJ is directly linked to his time in office. OTOH, maybe both reasons are true, the Party poo-bahs know Christie screwed up NJ, Christie knows it, too.
