House Republicans Move to Mend Internal Split over Military Spending

WASHINGTON—House Republicans Thursday scrambled to find a way out of an intraparty impasse over military spending that had threatened to derail passage of their own budget next week.

Republicans in both chambers have made passing a budget their top priority this year, but already are dealing with an internal split over whether military spending should hew to spending curbs agreed to in 2011, known as the sequester.

House GOP leaders had attempted to alter the budget while it was being considered in committee Wednesday night to bump up funding and remove restrictions from a portion of military funding, a change sought by defense hawks in their caucus. When GOP leaders couldn’t persuade the Budget Committee to amend the budget, House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) said the change would be made in a procedural vote when the budget bill is on the House floor next week.

“Completing work on a budget is always one of the toughest jobs we have all year,” Mr. Boehner told reporters Thursday. “There is overwhelming support in our conference for providing additional resources to protect our national security. In consultation with (House Budget Committee) Chairman (Tom) Price, next week the House will consider a rule that reflects those priorities.” Mr. Price is a Georgia Republican.
