Roof's Parents

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Sissyk (a host of the 2016 Postmortem forum).

Has anyone seen either of Dylann Roof's parents come out and apologize for his murderous rampage? I haven't but if you have, please post it. I find it unusual that parents wouldn't say something about an act of violence like this like so many in the past have done. I mean, they raised this little f'ing loser and put a gun in hands and I haven't heard squat from them. I did hear that the dad and the uncle called in the tip that identified him from the AME video camera. Anybody find their silence a bit odd?

7. It means no text in message area so those on mobile devices or slow internet don't need to

open the whole message if they don't want to. Putting nt into the message area here means the person doesn't understand what nt means

5. A quick google gives me this statement from last Friday

http://time.com/3929115/roof-family-statement-church-shootings/
“The Roof Family would like to extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to families of the victims in Wednesday night’s shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Words cannot express our shock, grief, and disbelief as to what happened that night. We are devastated and saddened by what occurred. We offer our prayers sympathy for all of those impacted by these events.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those killed this week. We have all been touched by the moving words from the victims’ families offering God’s forgiveness and love in the face of such horrible suffering.
Our hope and prayer is for peace and healing for the families of the victims, the Charleston community, and those touched by these events throughout the state of South Carolina and our nation.
As you can imagine, words are hard to find and we would ask that the media respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

8. They have received death threats so are probably keeping a low profile...

That being said his father is apparently a violent POS himself.

I first read about this in the Daily News.

13. I would bet that his racist mindset came from his parents.

So you're not going to hear them in public except through their lawyer's carefully constructed statements.

was dating a white girl that he (Roof) was interested in. He said he was upset about that.

His parents claimed that they tried to help him his whole life, but then they buy him a handgun? What do you suppose the "help" involved?

20. They did.

But I'm not sure that every parent of every kid who does something wrong (whether a huge wrong or a not-so-huge wrong) should issue a personal apology. You apologize for what you did; you don't apologize for what others do.

Sympathy, sure. But guilt inheres in the perpetrator. Very few families choose to have their kid become a murderer or rapist, even if in some cases it's a possible (but far from necessary) consequence of a lot of little choices they made for 20 years. That "consequence of a lot of little choices" while often enough true isn't considered pertinent and is even considered offensive in many, many situations at DU.

Far too many mothers and some fathers, however, immediately go public with defenses instead of sympathy: instead of showing guilt-neutral sympathy they're all "It's all a horrible misunderstanding," "My little Johnny would never do anything like that." Even when it's caught on video with witnesses. Some eventually come around; others just go away. In such cases, silence is better and there's no judgment for privacy.

After all, they have a right to privacy. Their son can't waive their rights.
