Statement from DLCC Executive Director on New Democratic Majority in the Wisconsin State Senate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 6 2012
DLCC Executive Director Michael Sargeant released the following statement on John Lehman's election to the Wisconsin State Senate
"On behalf of the Democratic Legislsative Campaign Committee I want to congratulate John Lehman for his victory tonight to the Wisconsin State Senate. Senator-elect Lehman will work to solve the real problems facing Wisconsin and propose solutions to bring quality jobs to Wisconsin and reverse the job losses and economic downturn that have plagued Wisconsin under Republican leadership .
"I also want to congratulate Senator Mark Miller, who will now take the helm as Senate Majority Leader and will work with the new Democratic majority to provide necessary funding to Wisconin's schools so that Wisconsin students receive the education they deserve."
"I also want to thank Lori Compas, Kristen Dexter and Donna Seidel for their hard fought efforts. Even though they came up short their hard work ensured that ultimately Democrats would win the Senate back in the end.
"More than anything, tonight's elections show that voters are tired of policies that are designed to attack and divide voters. Under the new Democratic leadership the Wisconsin Senate will work to bring Wisconsin together, ensure workers have basic protections, and once again make Wisconsin a state that works for everyone."

Especially with Walker's impending indictment.

(3,751 posts)goodnews when some was sorely needed.
However, in addition to the above, the seat Lehman just won has been redistricted to an almost bulletproof Rethug majority one:

Democrats need to win only one of the four Senate recall elections to seize the majority. But the elections arent expected to take place until late spring at the earliest, and the legislative session ends in mid-March. Under legislative rules, no bills can be introduced after that date until the next session begins in January 2013, and Republicans would get a chance just months after the recalls to retake the chamber.

But, as Richmonds report noted, even if it is successful, it may have no real impact on the control of the state Senate or its actions. Even if Wanggaard loses his seat, there would be nothing to stop Wanggaard and the state GOP from waiting a year, then mounting another recall to try to reinstate him. That would be a distinct possibility because of the Senate redistricting plan that has been passed by the state GOP, presuming it withstands court challenges.
Under that plan, the 21st District sheds much of the City of Racine and pushes west, to include Burlington, and south to include rural areas of Kenosha County areas which have traditionally voted much more conservatively. It would make Wanggaard pretty much a shoo-in.

(8,505 posts)At least that's what many of us are hoping for this morning.
And as for 2012, there are about 3 Dem seats that face more of a challenge than usual due to redistricting, but we stand a good chance of keeping them all.
