Voter Purges Show GOP Desperation in Face of Changing Demographics

An attempt to purge the rolls of "ineligible" voters backfires in Florida when many of those targeted turn out to be legally registered citizens. Similar efforts are under way in Texas and Ohio. The Justice Department has been at odds with Republicans over voter I.D. laws in various southern states, including Texas and South Carolina.

Why are Republicans and Tea Partiers so frantic to keep people from voting? The obvious answer is that they're afraid of the nation's increasingly diverse and urban population. It's on the verge of making the rural white male voter, the core of the GOP base, a permanent minority. If there was any doubt about this, a story by John Harwood of The New York Times made it all quite plain. While economic trends are working against Barack Obama's re-election, demographic trends are pushing in the opposite direction.

Do you think McCain picking Palin convinced women democrats to cross party vote in appreciable numbers?

4. Not in appreciable numbers, but I know some that did. But if he picks Rubio, they'll try.

Not for Democrats, but Independents.

If Romney picks Rand Paul, he's going for the Teabagger vote and he might get it.

5. Rubio is also popular with the teabaggers.

But I think the "identity vote" is a false meme. Early in the 2008 primaries, the AA vote was going heavily for Hillary. Not until Obama established himself as the frontrunner and most viable candidate did he start capturing the AA vote. In the general, the womans vote pretty much went along party lines... I didnt see any data that indicated Dem woman were voting for McCain because Palin was on the ticket, at least in any significant numbers. Far more likely was conservative Dem women voting against "the black guy".
I think a similar situation exists with the Hispanic vote. It simply cannot be assumed large numbers of Dem latinos will vote R simply because a Cuban- American is on the ticket. Latinos will vote for the party they think best represents their interests

3. People don't change, but the old ones die

and there are more new voters every election than dead ones. This "fact" has always been a problem for conservatives.
They must be thinking, "If only we could stop women and persons without property from voting..."
