This immigration decision on the part of President Obama may have just forced Rmoney into having to pick Marco Rubio as his running mate. Did anyone else here have that thought?

WASHINGTON, DC -- Who should be Mitt Romney's vice-presidential pick?
The answer to that question, according to interviews with several attendees here at the Faith & Freedom Coalition, is pretty clear: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R), who addressed this crowd on Thursday.
Jeff Biggs from North Carolina:
"Rubio. We heard him speak yesterday and he did an outstanding job. It seems like he speaks from the heart."
Barbara Samuells from Long Island, New York:
"I think there are many good choices out there. My husband and I have this discussion every now and then, and I very much like Marco Rubio, but I think just lately my favorite and who I think could bring the most to us is Paul Ryan."
Lisa Roper from Texas:
"Marco Rubio. He is pure passion and he brings America all in one voice. Just being an immigrant and his family, and I think that's something that America can relate to and it's a serious issue on the table for Republicans, so I am certainly for him."
Jim McCarroll from Blairsville, Georgia:
"Marco Rubio. I just have a feeling he's the right guy."

(17,064 posts)He can actually speak coherently, and its actually possible he's read some books. He does have a Palinesque history of grifting and financial impropriety that the Dems can attack him with. And while he is popular with older and conservative Cuban-Americans, that doesn't automatically translate into popularity with other Latinos.

(4,322 posts)The president has just picked a fight with the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. This is about as hot button an issue for them as any and they don't give a rat's ass about political fallout; they pride themselves on their refusal to compromise their principles.
This move highlights Senator Rubio's Dream Act Lite and will bring the inevitable comparisons. I can think of few things that turns the Tea Party Republicans off a candidate more than President Obama agreeing with that candidate.

(53,061 posts)Mark Rubio as a Cuban has virtually no pull with non Cuban Hispanics.
Hispanics resent the fact that Cubans get a pass on immigration issues and the fact that a Cuban supports tough immigration procedures is like rubbing salt in the wound.
If they had a non Cuban hispanic maybe but not a Cuban.

(228 posts)Rubio didn't think the President went far enough.
Also, there isn't any foreign policy experience between them, unless you want to know where France and Cuba are on a map.

I don't post as much as I did before because so many threads go off topic but I enjoy the site and have my fingers crossed for President Obama's re-election.

(1,185 posts)I believe he's smart enough to know what he doesn't have ... experience and party organization ... and what Mitt doesn't have ...nothing much except for money.
Hispanics aren't a voting bloc...they run the entire political spectrum. In 2016 Rubio will be more than just the Hispanic Token he's taken for now. And, he'll have a national name, thanks to this election season.
But as to who will sacrifice themselves for a bruising campaign with a sure loser? Not likely Rice...she's not down and dirty enough for this political climate and it would tarnish her image. His huge ego and patriarchal religious fundamentalism/racism is going to shorten up his "available list".

(1,055 posts)He got the stink of Birther on him wiht his embracing of Donald Trump and it won't get off him now, even with the Rubio pick.
But the Birthers have decided that your parents need to be citizens at the time of your birth for you to be a natural born citizen so they've pre-emptively decided Rubio is ineligible.
Catch-22 for Romney.

(35,694 posts)Hispanics would likely see it as cynical, particularly in light of the fact that Rubio basically approves of Obama's new policy. Romney just might lose Florida anyway and Rubio would be unlikely to help Romney with Hispanics or anti immigration people in places like NM, CO, NV and Arizona.

(1,831 posts)Not the cheap stuff either!
Mitt Romney isn't far sighted enough to use Rubio even in that limited strategic sense. And his need to pander will expand as he falls further into Barak Obamas traps. So he'll end up doing a more populist choice. Wouldn't even be surprised if half of his polling said Ron Paul. Not that he'll take that road either. I suspect he'll wait late, and choose from a popular poll.
But you're on!
