right-wing catholic leader and Ron Paul supporter: "You're first a Catholic, and an American second"

Again, not posting because I agree but to show you what goes on in their minds

At 5:59 he says that you're a Catholic first and then an American. He doesn't even bother to hide that his loyalty is to his fellow Catholics, and the Pope, rather than to other Americans. And that to him justifies voting against equal rights for gays, and the right of a woman to have control over her own body. Conservative Christians, Catholics and Muslims don't put America first, they put their religion first and their fellow religionists first. They may put on a mask in public that says that they "support America" but how much do you support this country if you are willing to discriminate against certain people?

They could care less about the constitution contrary to what they claim.

Fundamentalists of all stripes think that religion is primary to everyone, or should be; and that is why they should never be allowed to run a government.

You can only claim such a preposterous thing if you're born an American citizen who lives in the Vatican City!

In this country, this Constitutional Democratic Republic, you're an American first and foremost.

It's hard to imagine that there is actually a fifth column who wants to institute religious law at the expense of our freedom. But if you actually hear people some speak then it's pretty obvious.

The OP seems to assert disloyalty by Christian, Catholic and Muslim Americans.

I wonder if this falls in the same category

I don't get this idea that we should be tolerant of religion while intolerant of anyone taking it seriously. If God is in the equation then God always trumps nation and family and any other possible consideration.

If you believe that GOD expects you to have a higher allegience to the Catholic church then you'd be evil not to. If that is what you believe.

There's nothing complicated about it.

And if you put the US Constitution above the wishes of God (if such conflict exists), ditto.

Anyone who believes in the God of any of the great monotheisims and puts nation over God is willfuly disobedient of God or does not actually believe in God.

Actually believing in God and believing that one has some idea of what God wishes/expects and putting that above all other things is not fundementalism, it is religion.

And if you think God wishes that you be even-handed about religion then that's what you believe and you would do well to do that thing.

I am amazed that in this day and age otherwise rational human beings believe in invisible omnipotent little old men sitting up in the clouds....

ALL religions are equally vile.

The rightwingers were talking up the supposition that he would be putting his religion first, taking direction from the Pope in running the country. How times change.

In the 2004 campaign, the religious fundamentalists put women's right to choose before all other issues. I remember being impressed with a Catholic priest on "Hardball", during which he advised Catholics that the abortion issue should not supercede the more important issues, such as war, when making one's decision for whom to vote.

I have to wonder just how sincere these spin artists on the right are about religion; their opinions seem to be crafted differently with each election.
