Hillary asks people on twitter to explain how their student debt makes them feel in 3 emojis...
...because people who went to college can't express themselves using words?
Or is there an emoji with a stick figure trying to carry a 40,000 pound rock on their shoulders that I am not aware of? http://www.marketwatch.com/story/hillary-clintons-tweet-seeking-emoji-answers-to-a-complicated-issue-backfires-2015-08-12

1. Don't fall into a generational trap
Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean it doesn't to others.
Things like this reach millennials - and those that will be of voting age in a few years as well. My 15 year old daughter saw this and she pounded out several tweets with sets of three emojis to express her fears and frustrations. But she also talks about it with others in more verbose ways on tumblr with likeminded friends. It's easy to dismiss what Clinton is doing, but there's a resonance that may not show to your more traditional politics watcher/older activist types. |

2. I am a millennial, and I do have student loan debt.
And if it was a "trap" she just caught herself a lot of 'eye-roll' emojis from my wife and I

6. Hillary's taking pages out of Obama's plan back in 2008 w/social media engagement
But unlike 2008, social media has changed dramatically in interaction and we're seeing that here. She's adapting to the very different strains of social media.
Some of it won't make sense to some, others will connect with, some like yourself will "eye-roll" with it. The important thing is to get the message out, which is what her staff did with that tweet since it was linked to her plan. |

5. True. Plus it linked to her college plan.
People laughed at Obama on Between 2 Ferns, until Obamacare enrollments skyrocketed afterward.

7. A lot of his social media attempts were derided
Particularly since it was new. Hell, look at the number of people here who still don't know what "the tumblr" is.
But it's probably one of the more fascinating places to go to really look at politics and how it works through social media with a range of people, young and old. The trick of politics is to go where people are. A lot of it is definitely the meet and greet of rallies and stump speeches, but that's a small percentage of people that go. Through these venues and tactics like this, she makes herself via her staff a lot more accessible in a sense to a demographic that Democrats need to have on board with them. |

10. It doesn't seem to have reached those millennials who responded to the tweet.
I saw this and was shocked that someone could think that this was the way to go on such an important issue. See the comments from people who are trying to help those who were so distraught by facing a future saddled with overwhelming debt, have committed suicide and/or threatened to. I did not know those statistics though facing such a bleak future could have that effect on some people.
Please don't think that Social Media is all about flippancy and short cuts that are 'cool' when it comes to things as important as this. I assume the tweet that has generated so much anger, was not from Hillary herself, but from a staff member. She would be wise to respond, not in emoticons/imojis but in words that show compassion for the victims of neo-liberalism. I didn't post this because frankly this is not my candidate who uses Social Media to great effect and without any flippancy or the appearance of flippancy on major issues. There ARE ways to get around even twitters 140 character limit. Anyhow, this was not a 'generational' thing. |

4. How will all her fake Twitter responders be able to respond?
Or is the War Room paying big bucks to create fake responses from the fake Tweeters?

11. why are they fake?
I've seen the accusation that her twitter followers are fake because they only have one or two followers. .....well I only have one follower ( I have no idea why he is following me). ....the only reason I signed up to twitter was to follow Hillary and watch her make her announcement. Now I find I sort of like it.....it's great for breaking news, etc.......but I can assure you because I have only one follower.....I'm far from 'fake'. I suspect there are a lot of people like me out there.

14. And yet Hillary has a substantial lead in the polls
You would think that if her only supporters were Wall Street employees, and everybody else is a Sanders supporter, that she would be much lower in the polls.
