Mark Shields: Why Bernie Sanders’ Big Crowds Count in Presidential Race

Mark Shields says: "Sanders really could be David against all the Goliaths in both parties — the last, best chance to take back the American government from big money"

Sanders, his growing legion of supporters would concede, is no matinee idol and does not hide his 73 years. He doesn’t look to have wasted time on his personal appearance, and he definitely buys off the rack.

He does not offer the optimism that characterized both John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan or the eloquence of an Adlai Stevenson II.

No, what Sanders gives you is his unvarnished take on the truth. To the hedge-fund royalty and the private-equity princes, he announces: “You can’t have it all. You cannot get huge tax breaks when millions of kids go to bed hungry. ... You cannot hide your profits in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. You will pay your fair share.”

Audiences understand when Sanders declaims that uncontrolled campaign financing — with admitted individual contributions of $10 million to a candidate — because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 no-limits Citizens United decision has “totally corrupted” this nation founded on “government by the people.”

1. "The last chance"

I think we all know it too. Every one knows it in our hearts that it is now or never - that we cannot let them have it all. We have to take a stand so I an standing with Bernie!

4. This is a good read with some background about filling stadiums.

Why am I the only one who finds Bernie Sanders a nice looking guy? He looked great today in a blue and white pin striped shirt, casual Khaki's and he seems to have found a barber that knows how to properly cut, wiry, genetically curly hair.

He has a great smile that lights up his face and while he might have a forward leaning posture it seems that he's always been that way since the early photos of him when he was in his early 20's.

I just don't get the ugly remarks about an "unkempt appearance" and his supposedly "angry" body language.

He is a nice looking man. He does have a very nice smile. Some people are imps.

Cheers!

8. I feel the same.

His smile. It is sincere and kind and fun. I see not one thing wrong with his appearance. Anything else and he would just be one of the regular, groomed for success, fake candidates.

25. Great description of his smile

I would add a sprinkling of mischievousness showing, to me, that he's having a grand time.

13. I think he is nice looking, too. And also *pleasant* looking. Palin and W are goodlooking,

but neither has a pleasant look, because both always look smug, smirking, or sneering, like the mean kids in middle school.

15. You're not the only one, Koko. He is a very good looking guy, his face has character

which is very attractive. Someone made him laugh out load today at the Fair. Don't know what they said, I didn't catch it, but it was nice to see him laughing. He says his wife has told him he needs to smile more, he thought she might have a point, but he is talking about serious issues so he looks serious because he is serious.

His hair was fucking awesome and they have screwed it up making it all lay flat and pretty.

21. Anyone with curly hair gets called that.

I have naturally curly hair (not wiry, but definitely difficult) and, unless I have tons of "product" on it, it flies away during the first wisp of wind.

And, if he does need someone who understands how to cut that type of hair, I'll recommend my stylist. She has wiry curly hair and took it upon herself to learn the best methods to cut and style it. I won't go to anyone else.

For me, it's his intellect. I'm a hetero male but he could probably get me drunk and talk smart me into bed.

17. Extremely experienced observers like Shields are equipped to recognize what's happening

Go to this The McLaughlin Group clip at the 24:40 mark. Listen to Eleanor and Clarence give Sanders literally zero chance of winning. Then listen to McLaughlin quietly drop his bombshell of a prediction.

I was struck by it at the time. While McLaughlin is an old time Conservative, his show is interesting because it's about serious talk about serious issues that affect us all, and that are important in Washington. McLaughlin himself is interesting as he challenges everybody's thinking, and he likes making some daring predictions from time to time.

Remember when he said this (5/8/15), and what everybody else said, and that he went last. He was making a big statement, imo. 24:40 is the mark to go to. Copy and paste the following into your browser's address bar to get right to the prediction part of the show.

Very interesting indeed... But the youtube clip is apparently edited, ending abruptly at McLaughlin's surprising prediction and then cutting hard into another discussion without hearing his explanation as to why he gives Bernie a 25% chance of winning.
I'd very much like to see the original unedited discussion.

23. Might exist in the studio but afaik the editing was SOP

It's a low budget show, I think the editor just takes what they have and snips as needed. The Mclaughlin Group is broadcast Sunday morning and with commercials it only has a 30 minute slot. So the time of that youtube video is, if anything, pretty long already. It's a casual show and I don't think McLaughlin is paying any particular attention to direction signalling he needs to speed up. He's aware of time concerns, he just doesn't sweat them. lol

If I run across an episode where they update their predictions I'll post it in the multimedia forum.

30. Thanks Babel_17

I found a pretty complete archive of their shows at http://www.mclaughlin.com/library.htm
But as you said... the edits are all baked in just as in your linked video clip.

I am really curious about his reasoning for the outlier 25% prediction though... so if you find something on that, please let us know.

20. Sen Sanders message is very clear and it very clearly supporting the 99%.

Clinton on the other hand isn't very clear where she stands. When asked about raising the cap on Social Security, she said she was "open" to it. That's rhetoric for "I'm not going to commit." Isn't that her answer for everything? Fracking, TPP, the XL Pipeline, etc.

Sen Sanders want's free college for those that qualify. Clinton says that no one should go into debt for college. Sounds good but it's no commitment. Same for Medicare for all. Same for min wage. And on and on.

26. Nader filled stadiums in 2000 at his super rallies, ended up w/ 2 percent

Crowd size is not an accurate indicator of electoral outcomes, but merely a sign of a candidate's existing support base being excited.

Remember how conservatives thought lines at Chik-Fil-A rallies was a surefire sign that they were oing to take 2012 in a landslide?

Stick to reading polls to get a more clear picture.

Loved it when Brooks would try using some smarmy GOP talking point and Shields would expose it. The only thing I didn't like about Shields is he was nice to Brooks.
