Remember, to the GOP base, he's a practitioner of a cult-religion who changes positions more than they're comfortable with, ran for office previously as a moderate, used to be pro-choice, used to be ambivalent on civil unions, owns shares in an abortion-disposal firm, wrote the model for the ACA they hate so much (edit: Point is, he's not given them much to trust him on)...can he really nominate a lesbian who is to my understanding not terribly religious?

I'm doubtful. Whether he wants to or not...he's going to be compelled to pick an evangelical "guns, god and gays" moral-conservative white male. There is nothing there to push Bain Capital out of the news cycle if he does.

for McCain's flailing campaign. They chose her because they were desperate to make a statement, and what a statement they made!!

21. Romney's problem is that he has a number of conflicting requirments regarding the VP..

-- he needs a game changer
-- he needs to appease the conservatives/TPers
-- he needs a woman
-- he needs an Hispanic
-- he needs someone from a key battleground state
-- he needs an attack dog

And you could add more to that list. There is no one person to fill all those roles. His advisors Im sure are pushing him to go for broke and pick someone that will make news and give them a much needed distraction from Bain, etc. However Romney probably just wants someone he feels comfortable working with. In the end it will probably be a fairly safe pick with one or two of the above requirements. I suspect it will be woman but a "safe" woman like Kelly Ayotte perhaps.
