Just plain weird: Hillary to hold fundraiser at former house of Gambino boss.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/jimcallaghan/hillary-clinton-expected-to-fundraise-at-the-mobs-old-white#.drbm3W0gxG

The boss whose house it was, Paul Castellano, was considered to have been a relatively greedy and yet feckless mobster who most of his subordinates never quite respected. The job came to him not through significant personal exploits or popularity, but largely through personal connections with his predecessor, the founder Carlo Gambino. His greed, weakness, and disregard for subordinates opened the door to a coup by idiot street thug John Gotti, whose narcissism led more or less to the downfall of the Mafia in America, so indirectly Castellano himself can be credited with setting the stage for his organization's collapse.

The house is now owned by someone with no connection to Castellano or the Mafia, so this isn't a comment on that exactly. But when I hear Hillary Clinton and Paul Castellano's names mentioned in the same sentence, somehow it seems thematically appropriate. Not because it's the mob, but because it's someone who obtained a position of importance in their organization entirely via personal connections rather than merit and then disgraced themselves by being simultaneously selfish and weak.

Fortunately we still have a choice whether to let this particular version of "selfish and weak" hold the fate of everything we care about in her hands, because with Hillary Clinton the question is not whether she will fail, but when and how many people she drags down with her. Right now it's just her campaign. If she is nominated, it will be the entire Party and likely the entire country when (not if) she manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the general election - which she will do sure as the Sun rises, no matter how insane or inept her Republican opponent is.

Character is destiny. Hers is a matter of historical record, and nominating her in the face of that record is the proverbial definition of insanity.

1. Only a professional political propagandist would force the connection and call it

newsworthy.

As a Sanders supporter I refuse to be impressed by utter horsesh!t like this. Buzzfeed should be more selective.

This sounds like typical RW propaganda.

2. Downfall of the Mafia

It's a parallel I like, comparing the Mafia establishment to the present day Democratic establishment. They are somewhat similar in the way they designate successors, even though I think Hillary Clinton has enough accomplishments to merit her cornatio... um... nomination. I think she stands a good chance of winning in the general election since she has experience, money, and a powerful campaign organization. Even though I support Sanders, I would rate Clinton's chances as better than Sanders' when it comes to beating the Republican candidate. That might change over the next few weeks, and I hope it does. That "electability" thing is Sanders' only real hurdle. If Democrats decide a real progressive can win next November, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

3. Sorry. I'm a Bernie supporter, but...

...trying to turn this circumstance against Clinton is akin to Correct the Record's bogus correlation between Bernie and Corbyn and Chavez.

(Now if you want to talk about the fact that it's just another of those $2,700, closed-to-the-press, little people need not apply events, that might have gotten a different response.)

4. As a child I read books from the Jefferson parish, LA main library

This was in a house that had belonged to Carlos Marcello. So is my reputation forever blemished by my youthful indiscretion? Where do they find these idiots that pass for serious journalists?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Marcello
Carlos Marcello, also known as The Godfather and "The Little Man" Marcello (February 6, 1910 March 2, 1993), was an Italian-American mafioso who became the boss of the New Orleans crime family during the 1940s and held this position for the next thirty years.

5. Y'know, I have it on good authority that Bernie Sanders goes to work every day...

...in a building that used to be occupied by slaveowners...

...but that's just as stupid a connection.

6. I know I will regret getting in the muck but there is a bit of a sucker in me.

Please point to examples of her pusillanimity. Even her most committed detractors never question her intestinal fortitude. In fact I would argue her abundance of it is why she engenders so much hate as hate is the first cousin to fear.

Character is destiny. Hers is a matter of historical record, and nominating her in the face of that record is the proverbial definition of insanity.

The Clintons are 10-2, ? , 11-2 ? ,against the Republicans. I would argue if it is not insane to bet against them it is unwise.

Even if you discount Bill's ownership of the Republicans, Hillary is undefeated against them.

13. Most any well funded (D) could have won the 2 races Hillary did.

It is a blue state with a high population. Most any (D) who can buy enough ad time can win.

I not only discount Bill's wins against them, I think very little of hers too.

10. Seriously?

Will we next be told that it's ominous that Clinton enjoys the same food dishes that Scary Person X liked, as if that's somehow significant?

14. I'm puzzled by this reception, since she *is* the frontrunner.

It's almost as though people don't like her.
