Despite criticism from leading Republicans over their attacks on a notable senior aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a group of House Republicans conducting a witch hunt on government officials supposedly linked to the Muslim Brotherhood are doubling down on their accusations.
The group, led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), has yet to provide actual evidence of the infiltration they say is occurring, and the attacks on Huma Abedin, a long-time and well-known Clinton aide, drew ridicule from across Washington and highlighted the shoddiness of the entire report. But the lawmakers arent giving up, The Hill reports:
Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) told The Hill that the medias focus on Abedin was a deliberate effort to change the subject.
The focus in the media has been on one sentence in one of those letters, and
they have the right to do that, Franks said. But it certainly doesnt serve the American people when they overlook the central focus of the letters to try to take out of context one element of it that seems to be the only thing the left can aim at.

(24,391 posts)Seems to me that you can't (or shouldn't be allowed to) make such wildly dangerous allegations and then just not do anything about it? Right? Seems to me that they should be re-animating McCarthy's corpse any minute so that they can revive HUAC for the 21st century?
Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting that these crackpot theories be investigated but I DO think that they need to put up or shut up about this and hold Bachmann accountable for her targeting Abedin if there is not, in fact, any evidence that she is a national security risk to this country.

(24,391 posts)I remember that in his "heydey", people were targeting people and organizations with death threats that he claimed on his show were somehow "socialists", "marxists", or affiliated with islamic terrorists, etc. I hope and pray that no harm comes to Ms. Abedin (isn't she Weiner's wife?). The fact that she is getting death threats and requires extra protection on the basis of Bachmann's as-yet-unsubstantiated claims of being in league with anti-American forces should lead to some kind of investigation of Bachmann IMHO.

(14,180 posts)shame. Ultimately, it was 'shaming' that brought Joseph McCarthy down (through Joseph Welch's seminal "Have you no shame?" speech during the Army-McCarthy hearings). But, when a society has lost the power to 'shame,' there is no stopping Bachmann and her like, other than a full-blown hot civil war. It may yet come to that. I sure hope not. Shaming didn't work to stop slavery.

(24,391 posts)however given that they have an army of spin-doctors, apologists, propagandists, etc. at their disposal, it's hard to hold them accountable for much of anything. What happened at Abu Gharib was undoubtedly an embarrassment for the Bush (mis-) administration but, in the end, getting a rid of "a few bad apples", screaming "terra" every five seconds for the remainder of that year, and reducing what happened there to essentially Skull-and-Bones-esque "hazing" was apparently enough to put it out of the minds of the public. That and the fact that it happened to those "other people".

(51,666 posts)had to find another religious group to lie about and persecute. I'm surprised they aren't ranting about how MUSLIMS roast and eat Christian babies. That used to be the line about Jews back in the day.
