Stricter enforcement and reform of background checks, closing the gun show loophole, and banning assault weapons. He also called for an overhaul of our mental healthcare system, which is something that *really* needs to happen.

And another that probably should be in a facility but can't because of Connecticut's laws. Here's a video from John Oliver that does a better job of explaining some of the general problems than I could give you.

Mental Health Care
Thursday, January 24, 2013

The Senate health committee held a hearing Thursday on access to mental health services in America. It’s an issue brought into sharper focus after mass killings at Newtown, Conn., and other American communities. “We must make sure that mental health services are available to all Americans regardless of income,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, a member of the committee. “Today for low- and middle-income people living in rural areas it is especially difficult to find timely, affordable care.”

Sanders cited federal reports that more than 90 million Americans live in areas where there is a shortage of mental health professionals. Fewer than one-third of adults and one-half of children with diagnosable mental disorders will actually receive mental health services in a year. The access challenges are particularly acute in rural America where there are not enough psychiatrists and psychologists to meet the mental health needs of young people and seniors.

As incoming chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Sanders also expressed concern that veterans returning from war with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury conditions too often go undiagnosed and therefore untreated.

While mental health issues sometimes are caught and addressed in doctors’ offices and other primary care settings, there is a severe shortage of primary care physicians in the United States. A Sanders provision in the Affordable Care Act dramatically increased support for community health centers, which provide affordable primary care and mental health counseling. The law authorized $11 billion to improve and expand community health centers over a five-year period.

A continuing lack of primary health care in parts of the country will be the subject of a Primary Health and Aging Subcommittee hearing that Sanders will chair next Tuesday.

Oct 2015

Mental Health Services are way overburdened because of lack of funding and resoruces

Unless you are very well off, and try to get help for yourself or someone else, you will be tossed into an abyss of waiting, and "We can't see you (him or her) for two months."

You call a "crisis line" because you are worried that you or someone you kno w is going off the deep end and may do something drastic -- Unless they are actually holding a gun on someone at the time, you just get a bunch of bullshit platitudes and a recommendation to check with the bureaucracy tomorrow.

THAT'S HOW goddammit.

that's now a cumulative total of one issue where I don't think Hillary is a stealth Republican trolling America by running as a Democrat.

Realize the need for more controls. The background check time line for background checks should not be limited, it show ld be a complete background check and only after completion should the weapon be delivered. A hunter who knows the rules will follow them. I have older guns and it would be fine if all guns was required to be registered. Hillary is doing this to help Americans, we should be able to go to church, theaters, shopping centers, schools and any place public without the constant fear someone is going to start shooting.

O’Malley has set a national goal of cutting deaths from gun violence in half within 10 years.'

it's a sad state of affairs for our party that he can't get past 3% in the polls but Hillary sits at 40%+ (at least for now).

This just makes Bernie more acceptable to a large part of the electorate. Bernie is left of center on this issue. Hillary can have the "far" left here if she wants it. Good luck to her. I hope something consequential comes of it.

a lot of restrictions on gun ownership, I have given
up a long time ago on making this a critical part
of my vote. I have seen elected officials being
recalled due to minor steps towards gun control.

It is one issue where we find more disagreement
among democrats than you think.
