2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRW smears or not, no matter what. Now with HRC its almost one email controversy each day.
And this is why nominate her will be a direct route toward stunning loss.
Collective political suicide that would be for sure.
Please stop the crazy train before it derails.

(22,271 posts)I would think you would recognize the reality-based evidence. Blaming a few Bernie Sanders supporters on an otherwise pretty obscure message board is hardly a reality-based conclusion.

(11,366 posts)server and a failure to meet federal digital data retention laws is not.

(24,689 posts)If she had to do it over again she wouldn't have done it that way. It was messy and insecure but there is no major scandal here.. she wasn't selling secrets to the Russians; she wasn't taking hush money from banksters; she wasn't having affairs with gangsters.. I think her biggest fault was trying to be too controlling and not being careful enough with State Department email. I don't think that's a crime.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)However, the Russians might have some secrets they're sitting on because she was trading sensitive (note: I did not say classified. That's yet to be determined) information in emails to her aides.
But, while horribly naive about information security, having a private server for email isn't a crime, per se.
The potential crime is not keeping back-up per federal digital retention laws in keeping with State Department policies.
I don't know how long State requires its IT keep back-up emails (in case of FOIA requests or lawsuits or criminal investigations), but I'm going to make an educated guess that it's longer than the 30 days the Clinton team requested the email be backed up.
Here's a good overview of how and why digital records are maintained: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/us-chief-records-officer-details-federal-e-mail-record-keeping-programs/2013/06/16/a6995e92-d470-11e2-a73e-826d299ff459_story.html

(24,689 posts)The GOP will try to push this like Benghazi but eventually they will have to give it up.

(34,825 posts)the fuck does that even mean, and how does it mitigate the fact the she DID do it the way she did?

(24,689 posts)Now it turns out it was. Not that complicated to understand.

(24,689 posts)It's a case bad judgement perhaps.. a bit of sloppiness.. not criminal.

(34,825 posts)too many instances of Hillary wanting to do things differently if she could. That's not the kind of person we need in the WH.

(1,573 posts)...why shouldn't this be an area for concern? If HRC gets the nomination, the right-wing nut jobs will continue this smear campaign from now until Election Day. I see this as a danger to our holding on to the White House, because her standing against the Republican candidates has already seen some erosion (whether connected or not, I can't say). What will it be like a year from now?
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,708 posts)I suspect most folks will be more concerned about their own lives and families than some candidate's private server.

(1,573 posts)...but it's the constant FAUX news-like drone that she's hiding something, or not telling the truth. That can take a toll, and I'm afraid that it will take too large a toll to overcome. But then, I'm a pessimist at heart.

(99,708 posts)That being said I sincerely doubt these investigations will result in criminal charges as there has to be mens rea or gross negligence.
All candidates have vulnerabilities that their opponents will exploit and if they don't have any their opponents will just make them up.
It reminds me of the debate about a nuclear freeze in the 80s and the opponents of the freeze in the U S argued it would lock in American nuclear inferiority. Proponents of the freeze would stump them by saying would you rather have our hand (nuclear arsenal) or their hand (the Soviet's nuclear arsenal)
What does that have to do with anything?
I rather have Hillary's hand than any of her twenty or so GOP and Democratic opponents.
Will she win? Only God knows, but the predictions markets and voters when asked who they think will win suggest it is more likely than not that she will...
Fawke Em

I really don't think you're understanding the significance here.
She could have traded sensitive information with her aides via email and that information is now in the hands of foreign actors who could use it to harm the United States, blackmail her if she becomes president or put to use on any number of other malicious plots.
I think people would be concerned about that.
And, to preempt the cries of "well the dot gov servers have been hacked before," I'll reiterate: Yes, dot gov has been hacked before, but they have layers of security. While some employee personnel files may have been leaked because they aren't as protected as state secrets, rest assured that the government uses a professional IT staff who employs encryption, logging, monitoring, data and user classification and several other security techniques to protect our national security.
A hacker may have gotten in the living room through and open window, but they're not getting into the safe.

(34,825 posts)the people on the left flogging this story with the zeal of a hundred legions of Freepers actually have real-world experience in IT security and system administration. They understand the importance of adhering to standards and best practice. What are your credentials?
