Chaffee is going to make a stab at Hillary on her vote for authorization of the Iraq war thing.
Her camp is going to have cooked up an answer that they think is going to resonate. It will be something about her trust in the office of the commander in chief, her trust in the generals, and how she would ask the same trust be extended to anyone that becomes president. There might be a drop in about how President Bush betrayed that trust. She will use his name a few extra times in a negative fashion.
It will sell well and get some applause.
But I will not believe it.

This is a chance for all to shine or not.
Debates are usually dueling talking points. The primary benefit of them is to expose more people to a wider number of candidates than what they normally have available.
There is a reason that Hillary switched on the pipeline a few weeks ago and the TPP a few days ago. She does not want to have to answer a lot of questions on these matters. If called out she will give short concise answers that try to dismiss the question.

(9,497 posts)Just great hope for the others.
olddots
(10,237 posts)they will be very entertaining but leave little room for learning about the candidates .

(115,677 posts)Direct answers will be rare. Those who have their minds set on one candidate will hear what they want to hear.
kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)So, in that regard I don't think direct answers from all the canididates will be rare.
uppityperson
(115,677 posts)be rare. As they typically are in debates for as long as I remember. I find it very frustrating to watch debates because too often the question is used as a brief starting point to segue off into something else.
If someone answers directly, that is very good.

(9,497 posts)I tried watching those shows until I realized the point was not to actually resolve anything, just to hear the host talk. Doesn't matter who the host is...just used him as an example.

he said his top three goals were climate change, incoming inequality, and peace in the Middle East and North Africa. He also said earlier in the campaign that he was getting in primarily to keep the issue of the Iraq war alive in peoples minds. So I have no doubt that any chance he gets he is going to mention that he was the sole Republicans to vote against it. And if he had the correct information and enough information to do so, so did Hillary. No amount out of wiggling is going to get her out of that horrible vote and I hope he pounds it during the whole debate.

(7,865 posts)There are Democrats that are far more conservative and hawkish than Chaffee.
restorefreedom
(12,655 posts)but in the past he's talked about things like partly privatizing Social Security. On some of the financial matters, his former Republican alter ego comes out. But from what I know of him, I would still prefer him to Hillary.
kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)It isn't like he is going to get very far. He hasn't even made it to O'Malley numbers yet.
Chaffee and Webb will probably drop shortly after the debate.

(45,464 posts)hired anyone. They won't even appear on the ballot in 9 states. With a minimal effort, they can hang around until some of the early primaries.
Contrast with Rick Perry and Scott Walker who were starting to generate debts the contributions were not going to cover.
Good point. Are they just stalking horses for the Veep position then?
FSogol
(45,464 posts)Doubt O'Malley or Sanders would pick Webb.

(7,865 posts)I know it is a horrible thought but I never thought President Obama would have made him COS.

(1,464 posts)It isn't going to matter because Hillary won't be our nominee IMO.

(7,865 posts)Well that would make the list of things I like about Hillary.
But yeah, I am definitely pushing for Bernie all the way.

Or maybe he really did mean incoming equality, which would be nice.

(12,655 posts)i sometimes use the dictate feature, probably don't need to tell you how that goes sometimes. Thanks.

(46,436 posts)I'm just amused at what those automated features do on computers, especially devices like my iPad. I always have to read my posts over three or four times to make sure it didn't say something totally ridiculous. In your case it worked either way.

(12,655 posts)its almost not worth it.

(84,711 posts)I wish Chafee could have been a stronger candidate--but, he has a good message that needs to be heard and addressed on that issue along with Climate Change and Income Inequality.
sadoldgirl
(3,431 posts)Since HRC has tried to evolve on most issues
to join O'Malley and Bernie, I expect no great
differences among the three main candidates;
rather a cumbaya sort of thing.
The difference may come from the rather
conservative Webb.
Myrina
(12,296 posts)I don't think Bernie will pick any of them, though.

(8,171 posts)long as it is tolerable. I don't mind watching Repubs beating up on each other, Dems not so much.
I am most looking forward to how O'Malley does and how Bernie comes across. I'm familiar with Hillary so I'm not expecting anything to change my thinking on her and I think Chafee and Webb have no chance. We shall see though

(65,169 posts)Bernie strongly renounces his previous votes against gun control. With everything going on, I'm sure he will be asked about it. While I don't expect my candidate to be perfect, hopefully everyone sees how he changed on the issue.
I agree that something must be done and Bernie has already outlined what his plans for gun control as president would be.
Personally, what I want to see is Bernie getting his message out on economic policy.
mvd
(65,169 posts)Maybe the gun control questions will come early. I hope that while they get coverage, the debate isn't dominated by them.

(24,689 posts)Bernie's favorite topic!
kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)I can't possibly see why or how it would be more than one question.
The regulation of wallstreet
Expansion of unions
social security
national defense
reproductive rights
gay rights
police brutality
addressing racism
the great wealth disparity
working to stop poverty
Education K-12
higher education
Global warming
the environment
Working to build jobs
Working to improve infrastructure
campaign finance reform
Healthcare reform
The cost of medications
These and a dozen other issues probably deserve to see a bit of sunlight too.
If the desire to put down Bernie makes gun control big enough an issue to crowd out too much of the above list then maybe you need to reevaluate whether you actually care about gun control or just having Hillary win.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)Do you think this issue should crowd out some of the above issues?
Is there really a reason it should take up more than one question?
DCBob
(24,689 posts)Especially considering that the media wants a show to keep viewers watching.
Answer the question.
Should firearms take up more space than the other issues above?
Yes or no.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)You don't deserve an answer... however the answer is there for those with eyes to see.
kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)An intelligent answer would elaborate, explain, elucidate, or expand.
You have failed to provide any of that.
You don't care about gun control. All you care about is anything that makes Bernie look bad. Feel free to shuffle back to the Hillary group and collect your high fives.
