TPM: Clinton Talks Reparation Checks, Black Lives Matter With BuzzFeed (AUDIO)

TPM: Clinton Talks Reparation Checks, Black Lives Matter With BuzzFeed (AUDIO)

While campaigning in Iowa, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down with BuzzFeed's Another Round, a podcast on race and pop culture, to discuss Black Lives Matter and reparations in a lengthy interview.

As a part of the rapid-fire question round, host Tracy Clayton jokingly asked Clinton if she would be getting a reparation check.

Clinton used the question to pivot to her campaign platform of expanding opportunities.

"I’ll tell you what, I think we need to make many more investments in everything from pre-school education to affordable housing, that’s my form of trying to give people the chance to be empowered, to make the most out of their god-given potential," Clinton said. "I’ll try to get the system to change."

You know, we should ask as a completely serious question where all the candidates stand on reparations.

for the Native Americans? Contrary to what you assume most still live in abject poverty, and yet no one is talking reparations for them.

Reparations for African Americans? A nightmare. How would you do it? Forty acres and a mule? Forty acres of what land? How are you going to divide that up among maybe hundreds of descendent's. What about those who only are a quarter AA? Then how are you going to figure out who descended from slaves and who didn't?

At least with the Native Americans we have good records, with African Americans, not so much.

My point is regardless of how difficult it might be, I think reparations are a legitimate topic and something that should be spoken about.
