Biden supporters prefer Hillary over Bernie

Early Polls Suggest Hillary Clinton Did Pretty Well in Tuesday's Debate
By Kevin Drum | Fri Oct. 16, 2015 2:20 PM ED

Now it's time to take a look at the Democratic side of the presidential race. Obviously nobody cares about Webb, O'Malley, or Chafee, so let's zero in on Clinton and Sanders. Who won Tuesday's debate? Andrew Prokop summarizes the early polls in the chart on the right.

Now, these results are fairly consistent with Bernie supporters thinking Bernie won and Hillary supporters thinking Hillary won—plus a few extra for Hillary. We'll have to wait for the big national polls to see if the debate actually changed support levels much for either of them. At a rough glance, though, it looks as if most of the folks who prefer Joe Biden in the polls ended up choosing Hillary when the choice was limited to just her and Bernie.

This makes sense ideologically, since Biden and Clinton occupy pretty similar niches, and it makes sense from a name recognition standpoint too. But I'd point out one other thing that we political junkies might miss: Bernie Sanders can sometimes come across on TV as loud and angry. We're all so used to his speaking style that it doesn't affect us much, but for people tuning in for the first time, it might have been fairly off-putting. I don't know if likely Democratic voters feel the same way, but they might. Just a thought.

Otherwise he doesn't have enough support.

How can Bernie get Hillary/Biden supporters to vote for him?

Polls the last few months show her with roughly a 20 point lead.

If those numbers hold, she will win the nomination. It's Bernie who needs to convince Hillary supporters to vote for him.

<...>
The race is close with very liberal voters (Clinton gets 45% to 41% for Sanders), men (Clinton gets 35%, Sanders 28%, Biden 24%), and younger voters (Clinton and Sanders tie at 36). Clinton is dominant with seniors (51% to 23% for Biden and 15% for Sanders), African Americans (Clinton gets 51% to 30% for Biden and 13% for Sanders), and women (Clinton gets 48% to 22% for Sanders and 17% for Biden.)

18. Interesting summary.
Fri Oct 16, 2015, 03:34 PM
Oct 2015

Pretty small sample size, however - and only looking at registered Dems - mostly older (70% over 45), mostly white (62%), and mostly falling in the "somewhat liberal to moderate" political leaning categories (63%).

Public Policy Polling 551 Democratic primary voters between October 1st and 4th. The margin of
error is +/-4.2%. 80% of participants responded via the phone, while 20% of respondents who did
not have landlines conducted the survey over the internet.

I looked at the results .pdf found via the "full results here" link in the article.

Which carries the assumption that "Democrat" and "liberal" are the same thing. Which is a flawed premise itself, especially with Democrats liek Jim Webb runnign around.

I love Bernie and so do many Joe supporters, but his supporters hurt his image by trying to win every single argument and win every single point. You don't widen your tent by doing that, you close it. He can't win if you guys do that.

Instead it's reliant on whether or not you can browbeat his supporters.

LettuceSea, I'm very familiar with the "Well I was going to do what you wanted, but now you made me change my mind" trick. It's a way to do what you were going to do anyway, but make someone else feel bad as if it were their fault and not your own decision.

It appears you're forgoing helping Bernie's cause to defend and make it about yourself.

I encourage you to take a cue from Bernie at the debate, and how his good supporters have been defending Jim Webb. That's how you do it!

There are MANY of us who will support Bernie over HRC if Joe is a no go.

A few Bernie supporters need to realize that there are roughly 20% of us who may still need a candidate...so it'd be foolish to alienate those voters now by slamming Obama's VP who isn't officially running. Forgo that small battle now so that we can all win the war later!

does it mean that he is ready to hand the nomination to Hillary by not getting in the race?

This is precisely why he should have snipped this issue in the bud by announcing earlier his intentions.
