During his recent interview to Bill Maher, Bernie Sanders tried to defend hard the socialist policies that he represents. It is remarkable that the brainwash of the American people by this brutal system still has significant power, through the demonization of these socialist policies which benefit them! Many people still accept the neoliberal catastrophe as the only 'realistic' option for a stable society. The ghost of McCarthyism still stands strong above the American society.
However, it is certain that people start to change, and the best proof in Sanders case is that the social media declared him winner in the recent Democratic debate, instead of the corporate media who did everything to present Hillary Clinton as the winner.
This "demonization process" by the banking-corporate establishment is not a new tactic. In fact, it has been applied again back in early thirties, right after the burst of the Great Depression. Coincidence?

(14,177 posts)It might even go way back to the founding of our country. Demonizing people for wanting more than their overlords allow seems to have a long long history. Demonizing poor people is just another way of controlling the masses.

(15,703 posts)The mortgage companies allow us to live in a house that they can take away anytime they want.
They allow us to drive vehicles that they can take away.
If at anytime we disagree with them, they can change our credit score and for a lot of people that will mean they will loose their job.
We have become I guess like the old tenant farmers. No matter how hard they worked they never got ahead because the rent on the shack they lived in would go up. Or the prices at the company store would go up. No matter what it was impossible to say anything so that you could get ahead.
Even if you have a house with a small loan on it, the bank can notify you that you need to increase your home owners insurance.
Maybe the city will come by and say you need to replace the sidewalk in front of your house.
I guess we aren't slaves really because we don't have to say "Yes Master"

(14,177 posts)it's usually more expensive to rent. So, if you rent you are stuck in that cycle of never being able to save enough for a down payment because it's expensive to rent and the car breaks down or you take the bus and well that has it's own problems trust me.
And no we don't have to say yes master, but we can get fired for not saying the right things in social media.

(21,046 posts)is that the landlord has to pay the property taxes.
In a state that has no state income tax, like Texas, they promote the illusion that they are a low-tax state, when the property taxes are ridiculous in the cities, and the sales tax is something like 8.5 per cent, the fees for your car tags and such are high, and if you are in a profession that has to be licensed by the state then the money you pay to keep your state license up is high. The filing fees for lawsuits and copies of legal documents are high. The landlord also has to pay for repairs to keep the place that you rent suitable for human habitation.
And dwelling/fire insurance is also a good idea, and the landlord pays for that. The property management fees to have a real estate agent deal with the tenants, the contracts, the repairs, the emergencies and so forth, are 10 percent off the top of the rent coming in.
And some people steal the outside air conditioning unit in the day time, while everyone is at work, just for the copper piping. That's over a couple of thousand dollars to replace right there and the landlord has to eat that.
I'm agreeing with you. I'm pointing out some of the expenses of the landlord.

(14,177 posts)I am actually on their side in a way...Having looked at investment properties I have seen that the profit margin is sometimes very slim. So, I don't doubt a word of your post. But, it is a fact that high rents are part of the vicious cycle of poverty.
Thanks for adding that. I think it's important to add that just because someone looks like they have it made money wise, doesn't mean they don't also have their struggles.

(21,046 posts)One person who does not own a house might look at someone who owns several rental properties and thinks that person is rich, when the expenses can be quite high. So the net profit is not nearly as much as the first person thinks it is. You are right.
