Poll : Debate Win Doesn't Help Hillary Clinton

Washington (CNN)With the first Democratic debate in the books, a new CNN/ORC poll finds most who watched think Hillary Clinton had the best performance of the night, but her strong showing hasn't boosted her standing in the race for the party's nomination.

Clinton stands at 45% in the race for the Democratic nomination, with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders behind her at 29%. Vice President Joe Biden, who is considering a run for presidency and did not participate in last week's debate, follows at 18%.

Behind the top three, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb had 1% support, while former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Harvard professor Larry Lessig and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley all held less than 1% support.

This was a 3 point gain for Hillary from the last CNN/ORC poll, and a 5 point gain for Sanders. There were subcategory items to please each candidate's supporters. (ETA: Well, to please each of the top two candidate's supporters. With the other three all polling at 1% or less, I don't see any pleasing on the horizon for O'Malley , Webb, or Chafee supporters.) Sanders, for instance, jumped from a favourability of 62% to 84% among debate viewers, while Hillary continued to have a commanding lead on viewer preference in foreign policy.


(ETA: Note change from 3 point drop for Hillary to 3 point gain for Hillary. I was looking at a block of prior poll numbers when I wrote that, and mistakenly thought the 45% was down from a prior 48%, not up from a drop to 42%.)

1. Oh, and

Hillary continues to lead when asked by respondents who would handle various 'top line' policies, but among actual debate viewers most of those leads (barring foreign policy) shrunk, and Bernie leaped past her on income inequality.

4. Note: Wealth inequality is not even a category. Bernie is the ONLY one talking about that.

I sometimes conflate the two, or interchange them. Sloppy of me.

6. The category polled on was income. The wealth category was not included, which is my point.

Had it been included, Bernie would have won it hands down because no other candidate discusses it at all.

Media never mentions it either.

2. Your OP needs correcting: it's a 3 pt GAIN for Clinton and a 5 pt gain for Sanders
