2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDisproving the myth about white-only BernieBros...
A new Instagram account called Men Who Bern is a curation of photos of gorgeous guys showing their support for the 2016 presidential candidate. The name of the account is a play on words from Sanders' campaign hashtag #FeelTheBern.
And boy, are we feeling it.

(8,636 posts)There was a young, black Baptist minister, the Rev. Travis Whitfield, firing up the crowd at the rally; then members of the choir from his church sang for us.
When we marched with Bernie across the Women of Achievement bridge, the march was led by Bernie and a drumline group: The Metro Youth Drill Team, all black young people.
I saw a wonderful mix: white, black, latino, young and old. Bernie's not just drawing disillusioned young people back into politics, he's drawing older Boomers and Gen X-ers, who had given up on the system.

(41,600 posts)Looked multi-ethnic to me. Many races covered, not just white BernieBros. Blows that meme all to hell.
DU is NOT representative of how people in the real world feel about Bernie and his supporters. It just isn't. They're just loud HillaryClintonSupporters.com subset who can't accept their candidate is going to lose again. They're also a minority on here, by a HUGE margin.

(11,366 posts)That was my real motive in posting this: to show the meme is simply incorrect.
It didn't hurt, though, that the imagery was pleasant.

(12,151 posts)Or have the sales of Volvo station wagons somehow kept pace with Sanders' increasing popularity?
I drive a 10-year-old union made American car.
My Mustang was mostly made in Dearborn, MI (I realize no car is completely made in the USA anymore, which is sad, but Mustangs generally are on the top 10 list every year as being a car mostly made here).
DirkGently
(12,151 posts)They don't even make them anymore. We also own a VW -- wait for it -- station wagon though. It's one of those "cheating" diesels that gets 40 mpg but is apparently killing everyone.
I WILL drive this Volvo wagon, if it ever makes it to production.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)I learned to drive on that car - and it still runs, although needs some minor work and a paint job - so my step Mom thought I should have it.
It still smells like my Daddy.
DirkGently
(12,151 posts)Right before the original Mustang really got traction as an American classic, he put her up for sale at "1,000 FIRM," prepared to wait forever for someone to pay that ridiculous sum.
First person that came to see it plunked down the cash.
That's a beautiful way to remember your father!
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)I used to drive go-carts (all manual transmissions, which both my Mustangs are), so it really wasn't hard for me to learn to drive it, but that he LET me drive his brand new car when I was first learning is a testament to his trust in me.
I miss my Daddy. He died of brain cancer in May 2014.

(12,151 posts)I'd watch for the clutch pedal to go in and shift left-handed from the passenger seat. Years later he taught me to actually drive a stick, and I still drive one today (that old Acura is a slick-shifting Honda six-speed).
I'm lucky to to still have him -- in his 70's now.
I'm sorry to hear of your father's passing. He sounds like an excellent Dad.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Always there when I was growing up and after I moved out on my own.
Then I married a Palestinian. I NEVER knew my Dad was a bigot, but he went all "Archie Bunker" on me and disowned me for years. Even after divorcing, he still didn't acknowledge his grandson (who is JUST like him, btw).
He kind of "got into" my son at family gatherings when his sister died, but still went home and ignored us.
I remarried and he saw me pregnant with my second child, a daughter, at these gatherings, too. Nothing.
Then he got sick and I did what everyone, including my Mom, has asked if I'd do: I dropped everything and drove the three hours Alabama to see him. He was supposed to die that weekend.
He didn't.
I learned he'd moved from a Reagan Democrat to an Obama fan (Obama and my son share a middle name, btw). He finally "got it" when Mitt Romney ran. It FINALLY made sense to him how stupid he'd been. He LIKED Obama. He didn't care who his father was, either.
I got to spend the last six weeks of his life with him. No one asked for forgiveness or even discussed the past because we knew it was all we had.
Sometimes, it's best just to acknowledge you have what you have and go with it.

(12,151 posts)Bit pricey, but I'm in the market, and given that VW's screwup means their diesels are largely unavailable for the time being, I'm wondering if Chevy doesn't have the next best thing.

(9,527 posts)Is not the same a drawing literally 0 minority supporters. But you can't look at Sanders polling and say that he doesn't have an issue there if he wants to win the nomination over Clinton.

(6,342 posts)Bill signed laws that drastically increased the prison population....that mostly affected minorities far more than whites.
And the private prison corporations support Hillary.

(57,349 posts)"All over the industrialized world now, countries are saying, let us put an end to state murder, let us stop capital punishment," Sanders said in a 1991 speech on the House floor. "But here what were talking about is more and more capital punishment."
The bill, which included provisions to authorize the death penalty as appropriate punishment for crimes involving the murder of a law enforcement officer, terrorism and drug trafficking, never reached the desk of President George H.W. Bush.
In 1994, however, Sanders voted in favor of the final version of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, a bill that expanded the federal death penalty. Sanders had voted for an amendment to the bill that would have replaced all federal death sentences with life in prison. Even though the amendment failed, Sanders still voted for the larger crime bill.
A spokesman for Sanders said he voted for the bill "because it included the Violence Against Women Act and the ban on certain assault weapons."

Funny how some people see everything in just terms of "black and white" around here lately.

(11,366 posts)Funny story: I was driving home today - and I'm 45 - no spring chicken - and this young guy in his late 20s or early 30s driving by me in a Jeep smiling and waving and I thought, "Who the hell is that? I don't know him? Is he flirting?" He finally passed me and I saw his "BERNIE 2016" sticker! He'd seen mine as he was passing me and was showing "like-mindedness."
Hey... at my age, I'll take what I can get.

(56,582 posts)Nobody is saying Sanders has literally no support among persons of color. People are saying (correctly) that Sanders is having trouble getting large amounts of support outside of white liberals, who are only one bloc among many in the Democratic party.
