cases. Our job is to keep innocent people out of jail and to see that the death penalty is ONLY used for the most extreme mass murder and brutal killings. To infer that ONLY blacks have died under the death penalty is wrong in the face of facts.

The death penalty is counterproductive and cannot be administered in a way that is good for society. There is no "good" way for the state to take a life in cold blood.

As Governor, O'Malley oversaw the abolition of capital punishment in Maryland. I don't pretend to think he could oversee that same change throughout the United States in a single term or two, but I think he is clearly the most clear advocate on this question, and I think he's absolutely right: capital punishment does not serve the interests of justice or of society.

Partly because of my faith. What part of "thou shalt not kill" don't people get? A lifetime behind bars could be considered a harsher penalty than death - after all the victims have to live with it for the rest of their lives too.

I don't know the statistics but I question whether a disproportionate number of African Americans are wrongly convicted of crimes they didn't commit. I suspect this may be the case, though I cannot back it up with facts right now.
