Mon Nov 2, 2015, 06:35 PM

My neighbor had hip replacement surgery a week ago, I went over to keep him company a bit today

So we were sitting there with the TV on but down low and discussing a pile of books he had on his coffee table for entertainment while he's laid up, his wife was in their computer room with the door closed talking on the phone with one of her friends when I hear her hollering "I'M FEELING THE BERN!". The husband looks at me funny and kind of wonders out loud what the hell that was about and before I could answer he says Bernie Sanders and I nodded.

Now this is a sixty one year old white woman in the deep south who I was positive would vote Hillary because she's a nurse and pro choice largely because of what she's seen. I was actually surprised she even knows who Sanders is then I realized she watches Ellen and spends a lot of time on Facebook.

Yeah, I know, anecdata but it brightened my whole day.

2. Because she's a nurse? Nurses are among Bernie's staunchest supporters.

NNU (National Nurses United) endorsed him fairly early on, and has been showing up in support at most of his campaign stops, often in Robin Hood outfits to reference his Robin Hood tax ideas. Nurses WANT single payer, they approve of cheap or free college, they're onboard with basically everything he proposes.

6. I suppose I should have said former nurse, she's been retired for some years

This is a very conservative area and she is not exactly a redneck but wouldn't be hard to mistake for one at all, very Southern and conservatively religious. (Yes I know, she is a huge mass of cognitive dissonance on many things)

You'd have to know her, she's smart obviously but in 2012 I mentioned Mitt Romney to her well after he was nominated and she asked me who that was. Hillary was the obvious candidate for someone not much connected with politics but pro choice.

3. Nice.

I am desperately hoping that there are a lot more people like her out there, that the polling just isn't showing. And I'm so tired of the "Just shut up, sit down, and accept the inevitability of Hillary" that I could scream.

I really get to feeling discouraged about a possible Hillary Clinton Presidency. At least with a Donald Trump one we can look forward to genuine revolution, total overthrow of the government. Those who think Bernie couldn't possibly work with Congress, despite his 24 years in Congress, well all I can say is I wonder what reality they reside in?

Meanwhile those who think Trump or Carson would be a good President (no real DUers believe that, I'm certain) really haven't a clue how bad either one of them would be, as they apparently have never bothered to make an even cursory reading of the Constitution, and apparently have no idea how laws are actually passed, or how the federal government actually does things.

5. I am becoming less and less surprised when I run into Bernie supporters.

At this point is kind of like the first robins of spring, what was rare at first is beginning to fill the trees.

10. I'm continually inspired by Bernie's supporters.

It gives me hope that we may actually change politics in America (something I gave up on years ago, during the dark days of GWB) regardless of who the Dem nominee is.

At the end of the day, it's not really the PERSON that matters, it's the PRINCIPLES combined with the conviction & courage to stand up for those principles in the face of adversity.

And thank you for going to see your neighbor. That was a very caring, compassionate, Democratic thing to do.

12. The first time we met was on my roof in a torrential downpour

I had only been here a week or so, he's three houses up and the lots are fairly far apart, we hadn't met yet. A tree limb had pierced my roof and the rain was flooding in, I was trying to spread a tarp over the hole and he climbed up the ladder to help when he saw me as he was driving by.

So yeah, he's a pretty good dude for a not really political libertarian.

14. This is going to happen thousands of times and then millions of times across America.

People breaking free of the oppressive media coverage telling them that Hillary is so far in the lead that opposing her is practically disloyalty.

People are going to say, enough of this BS - I don't want Hillary, I want Bernie!!!

16. Thanks for sharing such a simple, uplifting story, Fumesucker.

To me it's logical that Bernie would appeal to regular Americans living in the south and everywhere, because he evokes the mind set of our country's founders, which placed the well-being of the people ahead of private power and greed. Bernie's reminding us what our beautiful country, and we ourselves, are all about.

You're a good soul to visit with your neighbor while he recuperates, and so too was he, to help you with the hole in your roof. This is the true nature of America; we cooperate and help each other out.

We all need, and deserve, President Sanders. I hope we get him.

AND, please encourage him to do his PT. Very important to do the physical therapy. Most of the time I do not even remember that I have a hip replacement.

24. I went by again today, he's been visited by the PT who says he's 90th percentile on recovery

He's a pretty tough old coot who kept going full speed until the hip wore out in his mid to late fifties. He's more likely to overdo it than otherwise.

and a couple of our unions have endorsed him. We've all seen the worst the insurance industry has done. We all know there needs to be a revolution and we'd prefer a peaceful one.

23. While visiting family last week

who BTW lives in a solidly red area of IL I noticed Bernie bumper stickers, large signs in fields and yard signs. It wasn't overwhelming but I did take notice. I think the election of Rauner has a little something to do with it. My family said the red-hot Republicans are really unhappy with him.

29. Sen Sanders and his grass-roots supporters will have to work extra hard to

overcome the billions donated by the 1% and major corporations, and the support for HRC from the Democratic Elite.

To regain our Democracy we need to get dark money out of politics.
