Sanders: I would lose if election decided by black voters

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says in a new interview that if African-American voters decided who becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, he would lose.

"If the elections were held today, just among the African-American vote, we would lose," Sanders told NPR in interview excerpts released Thursday.
Sanders went on to say he believes there is a "real path to winning the support of the African-American community."

White House hopeful Sanders has struggled to gain traction on Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, among several key demographics, including black voters.

Cornel West joins Bernie Sanders on the campaign trail in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As Bernie Sanders sought to broaden his exposure Saturday in the first presidential primary state in the South, he was joined by a controversial traveling companion: Cornel West, an African American academic who has been highly critical of President Obama.

Yeah, Bernie and Cornel.. out there looking for the African American vote as they try to tear down President Obama together.

Georgia Congressman John Lewis will boycott Netanyahu's speech to Congress next month.

“To me, it is somewhat of an insult to the president of the United States,” New York Rep. Greg Meeks, a black Democrat, said earlier this week after leaving a White House meeting with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, who plans to be out of the country while Netanyahu speaks.

I'm sure she, President Obama, and many others in the government would prefer dealing someone else, but Americans don't elect Israeli leaders.

Then again I remember in 2009 West talking on Tavis's show about how Obama was ignoring "the leaders of the black community", when it struck me that they thought that still meant "them", and that kind of made me sad.

135. Bravenak, you truly disappoint me

Yesterday we had a conversation that I felt was enlightening. I have to question how sincere you were. You and several of your buddies have gone about dancing on the grave on a DUer who was banned with the picture in your signature. It is in such poor taste.

You know several of your buddies put your picture in their profile while you were not here. They made a big deal about your being temporarily banned. To see you come back and continue to exhibit the behavior that got you banned makes me think you really learned nothing from that. You have no scruples about stepping on people that disagree with you.

Since you and your friends have been going around and lecturing Sanders supporters on the TOS, let me give you a refresher course:

The DU Community Standards state: "It is the responsibility of all DU members to participate in a manner that promotes a positive atmosphere and encourages good discussions among a diverse community of people holding a broad range of center-to-left viewpoints." Members who demonstrate a pattern of disruptive behavior over time and end up getting too many of their posts hidden by the jury (measured by raw number or percentage) may be found to be in violation of our Terms of Service. If you seem to be ruining this website for a large proportion of our visitors, if we think the community as a whole would be better off without you here, if you are constantly wasting the DU Administrators' time, if you seem to oppose the mission of DU, or if the DU Administrators just don't like you, we will revoke your posting privileges. Remember: DU is supposed to be fun — don't make it suck.

My mentioning this upsets people. Maybe they will listen to him about his issues with African American voters. Perhaps one should not do such things as I have witnessed, like pretending to be black to outblack a black person in order to pretend that nothing is amiss between his campaign and the black vote. He should have hired me.
I think we can end the meme of 'race baiting' and 'race card' soon if his support will follow his lead. Bernie would never say things like that. He is not that type of person.

Since It is not money I want, but inclusive spaces, I would be better at it. I would tell him what is wrong for free. Just to help myself deal.
I have a long list of ways he is not connecting with the black community.
How often do you see Bernie hugging black folks or attending their functions. Rule number one of black folks, you must have respect. Manners. Come by and speak to us and sit for a spell. We see Hillary and Bill are QUICK to grab up ANYBODY and hug them up and shake hands and kiss the baby and pat the dog. It matters. Photo ops are IMPORTANT. Connections are IMPORTANT. Pandering is NECESSARY. You cannot win unless you make people LIKE you the best. Most do not vote based on policy alone. We have two Democrats. Which one do we LIKE better. Not which one has stayed the same, or has slightly better financial policies. We know nothing is gonna pass so the policy point is MOOT.

Nobody will even admit to doing anything wrong this Summer, yet they want excuses for Hillary FROM black folks. For 8 years ago. Crazy huh? I even recieved a nasty letter to my home after Seattle. From a so-called Bernie fan. If that is the black experience in dealing with Bernie's grassroots... No wonder he is low in the polling with us.

48. I did not say they don't want things. But your approach is very paternalistic and suffocating.

We do know how to think and make decisions on what is right for us on our own. Most of us do not have a problem with Bernie on policy. Many of us find the paternalism to be the most infuriating thing. It pushes us away. Make us feel like people think we need them to do the thinking for us and just lead us to where they want us to be. Which is where they are. But if we bring up the gaps, then we have issues. It is not the policy. It is the delivery of the message that makes us sick, quite frankly. I actually had someone pretend to be black to try to win a debate with me on what black folks think. That was here. Recently. That kinda stuff? Turns us off. I'd rather have slightly worse policy than to be humiliated constantly by paternalising. I do have my dignity.

I am black. Why do you as a white person need to use such vile imagery to attack me with? Do you do that with white people too? That is problematic. I am telling you that YOUR approach is off putting. You are my point of contact with the Sanders campaign right now. This is not a way to help him.
You are using a disabled murdered black man as a cudgel AGAINST a black woman. How is that helpful? It makes my stomach turn and want to not listen to you further. It is the exact wrong approach to take if you go round trying to lure black voters to Sanders. It's like republicans screaming about planned parenethood killing black babys. Upsetting and brings nobody in.

Sanders delivery is pessimistic. He is not a creative thinker, just stolid, not imaginitive or hopeful.
He had peopke going around pushing black voters AWAY and making him look bad. Lack of charisma. Rarely touches people. Things like that. Oh, turns race issues into money issues.

57. Yes--I do do it with white people, many of whom were pretty pissed off about it in 1992.

Sanders has the only hopeful policy programs that any candidate is putting forth--at least until Clinton copies them (a very good thing, IMO). Every other anti-Sanders post is about how changing the prison-industrial complex, regulating banks, demilitarizing the police, raising the minimum wage etc. is just not possible, so he he being really silly advocating for those things that a Republican congress would never let him do.. THAT is the real pessimism. I'm sure glad that marriage equality advocated didn't take that route 10 years ago.

Oh, and the Iranians are not my enemy, either.

And BTW, black voters pay just as much attention as white voters. Which is barely any.
And nobody gets that 63% of alienated voters until they get them to vote. Counting non voters is bad strategy.
Still, no reserve of black voters, no hopeful message, lack of charisma. None of this addressed. I am trying to see where you think he has made inroads in a demographic that does not vote.

Are black women ready to stand in long lines to vote for him? No. They'll do it for Hillary and get her the south in the primary. The midwest. Where is he even ahead of her?

Do not count on a Barack Obama like rise for Sanders. They are not the same. Many blacks switched from Hillary to Obama. We have no reason to do so for Bernie. He never even comes into our communities often. We do not know him. We know her. And we don't wanna hear his econimic solution to our social problems or get condescended to or treated to passive aggression if we are not interested in him.

We need her leadership, not just here in America, but all over the world. She is tireless in her advocacy for those who have been left out and left behind. She is ready to be President on day one. Hillary Clinton has my wholehearted endorsement, and I plan to work and campaign for her to see that she is elected the next President of the United States."

I suppose when Hillary fails to materialize into the social justice warrior that some people apparently perceive in her (Ive looked hard and I still can't see it) we can always pin our hopes on Chelsea. Surely it will be her turn in a few years time.

Candidate Sanders doesn't talk in easily digestible soundbites. He's no pusher of junk ideas.

And Sanders is going to find that path...because he is a skilled and experienced coalition-builder, the kind of talent that is desperately needed in this country.

he's polling badly among virtually every other demographic according to numerous polls: Whites, Asians, Hispanics, millennials, self-described liberals, self-described moderates, elderly voters, you name it. He lacks debate skills, and is more of a single-issue politician rather than someone who is balanced (devoting more attention to economics than to social and foreign policies). As I learn more about him, I'm seeing him less as someone who is ready to take on the GOP and has a plan to govern effectively, and more as someone running to just voice a few economic concerns and make them part of the mainstream.
