Could Obama Be Headed for a Landslide?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/12/13/michael-tomasky-could-obama-be-headed-for-a-landslide.html

Ten months and three weeks is a long, long time. But today’s poll suggests that a wipeout of such proportions is not unimaginable. By a president whose anemic approval rating is just 44 percent! But I am not here to say the GOP had better grow up fast. Quite the contrary. If this tantrum lasts through the election, and if 2012 is for the Republicans what 1984 was for the Democrats, then finally our polity stands a chance of functioning again. The Tea Party will be dead and buried. Grover Norquist’s vise lock on the GOP will loosen. Someone will start a centrist Republican Leadership Council, just as people started the centrist DLC back in 1985. A certain number of elected Republicans will understand that being the Party of No didn’t get them much of anywhere. So this poll should not be a wake-up call for Republican voters. Hit the snooze button, folks, and keep fuming away.

You don't remember people begging Hillary to exit the race so Mr O wouldn't be too damaged?

However, we can count on the American people to forget anything older than a couple of weeks. How else can one explain that they keep re-electing the most heinous of criminals.

at a sustained pace. But today's economic news wasn't all that great--retail sales in December up only 0.1% and weekly unemployment claims up by 24,000 over last week. Otherwise, if things continue to be sluggish it will be a very close election.

When I listen to the news what sticks out like a sore thumb is when the 'media' says: " if so and so doesn't change by the election then Obama won't win ... "

Well says who?

The media always tries to tell the American public what to think and what will happen - THAT does not make it true at all.

They should be telling America that: no matter what shape the economy is in and no matter what the unemployment rate is in November 2012 that it will be WORSE if folks vote for the republicans in 2012.

I am starting to believe the majority of Americans do NOT know shit! Today I was watching a repeat of a John Stosel's show on FoxNews and the folks they asked questions to on the street couldn't even give the correct answer to who was the person when shown photos of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. In my opinion there is a HUGE amount of voters that vote that do not even know any of the issues or any of the facts about anything - anything at all.

Just my two cents

If the economy recovers sufficiently, the GOP is gonna lose. If that happens, I do think you'll see some leadership changes all around. Paul is going no where, but you can bet that people will be looking at his message and seeing how much of it they can incorporate. Huntsman could emerge out of this as the next "Romney", i.e. the presumptive nominee for 2016. This could be good for the democrats too, because that would probably suggest that, much like Gore did, the next democrat will probably try to run to the left of Obama. In part to ensure that the GOP doesn't co-opt any issues from the democrats.

But he did. He won in one of bluest states in the country.

What makes you think R.money won't win in the red and purple states? If he does he has the electoral votes to win.

IMO, the election is by no means in the bag for Obama.

And you know whomever wins the Republican nomination are going to have the majority of Republican voters behind them. And then you have to consider Republican dirty tricks - blocking minorities from the polls, the dead rising up and voting, and 'missing' ballot boxes or machines taking dumps in Democratic districts. The list goes on and on.

The numbers haven't changed that much between then and now. Obama will probably win but then again expect the rethuglican party to resort to every trick in the book to put whoever they nominate whether it's Ron "I hate blacks, gays and Jews" Paul, Frothy Mix, or Mutt Romney

And I'll go further than some people. The economy can sputter and Obama can still win a landslide. Now that we've got a look at Mitt Romney, he is a very weak candidate. Romney is the poster child for privilege, greed and excess. He's got nothing. The only thing that could make it a close election would be another dip in the recession.

El Chimpo Diablo got elected, TWICE (yes, I know, with the asterisks....)

Bush Senior got elected, thankfully only once.

Reagan got elected, TWICE, by landslides!!!

Never underestimate the power of stupid in large groups!

I certainly hope that America sees through the nonsense of the GOP, but we can't let down our guard for a second. Look what happened last election - Congress is infested with teabaggers right now...

With the new Super PAC option available for any rich whacko extremist group to use we are going to see the airwaves absolutely flooded from floor to ceiling with pure propaganda. It's already happening just for the Republican primary.

Once the real election season gets underway we will be drowning in ads that scream out horror scenarios for the future if you elect one candidate or the other.

People are going to be so sick and confused by the time elections come around that I won't be surprised if a large portion of the undecided middle just stays away which could make the outcome uncertain.
