Big news tonight. Iowa youth caucus event was held throughout Iowa. It gave a campaigns a chance to flex their organizing muscle and see what kind of support they had.
While Sanders was the runaway winner, the big surprise of the night was O'Malley's 2nd place showing. It shows the organization he has in the state and how his retail politics is paying off.

(24,329 posts)Had a friend in the army who pointed out several years ago, that only once had the winner in the scholastic news presidential vote (voting my elem and junior high kids) not been elected president.
That is because they reflect the voting patterns of their parents
I think the only one was Reagan-Carter (the SN vote was mid September and the tidal wave began in early October)

Pretty telling.

(57,936 posts)a lot of support for Bernie in the families of the voters in the Youth Caucus.
I was out campaigning for Bernie tonight. I'm in Southern California. Lots of support for Bernie. Incredible in fact although I hear, "I like him, really like him -- but he can't win." Then I hear "I don't like Hillary." That's what I hear again and again. I don't say disparaging things about Hillary except that she takes money from Wall Street and big corporations -- which she does.
Bernie is doing far better than the polls we see on DU would suggest. In fact, I am beginning to wonder what is going on with those polls. I do not think they are accurate at all. I's puzzling to me.

(42,862 posts)get only one vote each, not one vote for each child they have. (Sorry, "Duggars".)
It's an interesting barometer, and a valuable civics exercise for the youth, but likely to be about as accurate as an online poll.

(1,464 posts)They thought they had it in the bag and didn't organize or do retail politics. Same thing is happening again. Iowa doesn't do coronations. They make you work for the win.
Don't tell them to change. Let them keep laughing at the youth and making fun of them.
Hillary has this in the bag. Her supporters can continue to act like she walks on water!!

The dismissiveness of those supporters is their own problem ...
Sure thing - Hillary has this in the bag ... Time to measure those window drapes ... Hillary likes golden colored drapes in the Oval Office ... Velvet Gold ...

(1,464 posts)for Dean. You could tell when I was down there that Kerry's campaign was the most organized and Dean didn't know WTF they were doing.
I do think it is telling that Hillary's team didn't even send representatives to some of these caucuses.

(17 posts)I do find it curious to learn that Clinton is starting caucus training and organizing in Denver/Boulder starting tomorrow, when Bernie's organizers has been in caucus and organization training since late October.
A day late, a dollar short, I'd think.

(6,133 posts)I have a college age daughter who keeps asking me things about Bernie. I tell her that he is really what he says he is. On Thom Hartmann, he has been the most approachable member of the Senate. You call in on Fridays and he answers. Before the Senate, he did it as a congressman.

Did they say anything about how the other candidates?
emmadoggy
(2,142 posts)They said that the Bernie representative was this sort of funny, older hippie-type and was a lot of fun.
They had to watch all the Republican candidate videos and said Rubio's especially was really stupid, LOL. They had to do both the Republican caucus and Dem. caucus and said during the Republican part they were pretty quiet and not very excited. They said it was terrible to have to decide which Republican to vote for (because who wants to vote for ANY of them!) Then when they got to the Democratic part, they were engaged and excited, LOL. Bernie won for the Dems in their caucus. I think they said Carson won for the R's.
Their History teacher in school has been discussing politics a lot lately and is a Republican. Though we are surrounded by mostly blue counties, we are in a little island of red here. I'm really proud of how instinctively they are grasping liberal views (they are still a couple months shy of 14 years old). And from what they tell me, my son esp. has not been afraid to engage with the teacher or their peers on the issues they've been discussing. They've also been taking online political quizzes - the type that tell you how liberal or conservative you are, or whether you are R or D, or which candidates you most align with etc. They come up true blue every time. Yes, they know that both mom and dad are staunch Democrats and have heard me esp. spouting my thoughts at times, and I'm sure that influences them. But I've been pleasantly surprised to hear them talk about certain issues (that we haven't really talked about before) and they tend to come to the liberal conclusion most of the time.

(1,464 posts)I think that it is pretty telling that the Republican results mirrored the polling results exactly whereas the Dem polling results didn't reflect polls at all. Leads me to believe that there is less enthusiasm on the ground for Hillary than what is being reflected in the polls. Caucusing takes a big commitment and I think the Bernie and O'Malley supporters are enthusiastic to show up to support an underdog, where Hillary has more lukewarm supporters who may not show up on caucus night.

(1,464 posts)Hillary overlooked this age group last time as well while Obama organized high school kids who could vote and did overwhelmingly for him.
And it turns out that this youth caucus is surprisingly predictive of actual caucus results.
But, if Hillary supporters want to mock potential voters, that will only help O'Malley and Sanders.
