Killer Mike Says Bernie Sanders Is Like 'An Extension Of Dr. King'
The two met for soul food at The Busy Bee in Atlanta on Nov. 23rd.

<snip>

Killer Mike's feelin' the Bern, and he's not trying to hide it.

In a phone conversation with HuffPost Live on Tuesday, the rapper called Bernie Sanders "an extension of Dr.King," and thus his pick for President in 2016.

He elaborated:

After having a discussion with him yesterday and talking about, in particular, the legacy of Martin Luther King -- You know, when Dr. King died, he died with a set of plans and a goal, <one of which> was... to bring attention to the war machine that was financing the Vietnam War, and the only politician for the last 40, 50 years that's been consistently lined up with King's vision of social justice and people before corporations and the importance of honoring the poor and making sure they can rise above poverty is Bernie Sanders.

The Run The Jewels musician went a step further, declaring the Vermont Senator to be "the truth," and deeming him "honestly what this country needs."

"I am going to give him my full support," he continued. "Because I want my children and grandchildren to enjoy what America is, and not what America's turning into."

Hear Killer Mike say more about why he's supporting Sen. Sanders in the clip above.

You don't have to accept that explanation, but I'm sure Florida-Georgia Line likes the money they racked in from it:

Strawberry shimmer on hot lips,
Silver buckle hangin' off her hips.
Eyes sparkle when she smiles.
Shinedown on the radio dial.
Homemade jar o' lemon drop, take a sip.
Don't stop girl, you know I love it when you get your shine on!
'Cause you and me be rocking all night long!
Summer sky dripping rhinestones,
Turn your party lights on,
Baby get your shine on - shine on!

Baby get your shine on!

SNIP lyrics

Homemade jar o' lemon drop take a sip.
Don't stop girl, you know I love it when you get your shine on!
'Cause you and me be rocking all night long!
Summer sky drippin' rhinestones,
Turn your party lights on,
Baby get your shine on - shine on!

Baby get your shine on!

(Psst... "lemon drop" is slang for moonshine)

Now, I don't much care for country (I like bluegrass, though), but I do live less than 3 hours from Nashville and have friends who listen to it, so I am aware of some of the songs.

P.S. As a Southerner, I've heard that phrase all my life, but using these lyrics was the easiest way to prove it to you.

For those that haven't watch the video, he gave his Grammy to his grandmother because she raised him and wanted him to graduate from college. He didn't do that but wanted her to have a piece of his alternate success, and his grandmother was thrilled. Turns out Killer Mike is a sweetie-pie.

KM is politically active because he cares about his community. West is about himself.

It's not a matter of music.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning producer/artist Kanye West has already established himself as one of the premier artists in the recording industry, but put away the microphone, bling and neon, and you’ll find a crusader against poverty, hunger and poor education.

In 2005, West and his late mother, Dr. Donda West, co-founded the Dr. Donda West Foundation with the goal of reducing the number of kids who drop out of school. The Foundation’s first initiative, Loop Dreams, challenged at-risk students to learn how to write and produce music while simultaneously improving their academic skills.

“During my high school years, it’s the music that I really felt saved me,” said West, “It kept me out of the streets, it kept me from getting into trouble, it gave me something to do when I got kicked off the basketball team. You just get lost in the music. That’s what I did.”

Through donations, concert proceeds, and his foundation, West has been a vocal and outspoken supporter of broader education issues, and of organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam America.

West contributed to a CD compilation benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina.

(CNN)Music's first family, Mr. and Mrs. Shawn "Jay Z" Carter — that is Jay Z and Beyonce -- have been on quite the philanthropic streak, blurring the distinction between entertainer and saint.

Recent reports -- based on tweets from author, filmmaker and protest organizer Dream Hampton -- suggest the couple may have paid "tens of thousands" of dollars in bail money for those arrested while protesting the pattern of police brutality in Baltimore, specifically the killing of Freddie Gray in mid-April. In addition, the two may have given funds to help expand the "Black Lives Matter" campaign, designed to call attention to the plight of black Americans.

The generosity has even extended abroad. Just recently, Beyoncé paid a visit to Haiti to meet with citizens affected by the devastating 2010 earthquake. Photos from the trip show the singer smiling as she poses with aid workers, tours communities and passes out coloring books to children in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Killer Mike Talks Race Relations, Calls For More Minority-Owned Labels at MIT Lecture

About a dozen journalists, college and professional alike in awe of Run The Jewels as per their conversations in the hallway, shuffled in and pulled up chairs still warm from Friday (April 24) classes. Killer Mike was seated, waiting for his pupils by a wall of chalkboards tagged with stray equations, slowly picking at a plate of fresh fruit on his desk.

"You'll have to speak up." A smile clean across his beard, Mike apologized for being hard of hearing. "My ears are shot. I'm a musician."

...

The first question from a student, about the "slave and slave master construct" of the music industry, cut directly to the topic of the visit: race relations in the United States. In turn Mike skipped any small talk, right away setting the tone for his installment of the ongoing MIT Hip Hop Speaker Series. For two-and-a-half hours, in class with the reporters then nearby on a leather couch in an unusually intimate lecture hall, no punches would be pulled or words whispered.

...

A graduate of Morehouse College, the 40-year-old Mike's academic and activist stripes are as impressive as his rap credentials, and of late he's leveraged RTJ's enormous popularity to amplify progressive messages-- lecturing and writing op-eds, attending tonight's White House Correspondents' Dinner, challenging media outside of the hip-hop paradigm.

He grew up the son of a cop in Atlanta church culture, and was trained as a community organizer by civil rights icons; with the current heated climate around issues of police misconduct, he seemed a fitting choice of guest. Not everyone thought so though, and so after finishing his interview with journalists in class, Mike began his larger lecture by addressing a faceless student blogger who protested his appearance ahead of time.

"They asked me not to mention this," Mike told the crowd, adding that "colleges get scared when people write mean shit about the people they bring." Nevertheless, he raised his middle finger for the hater, blasted, "No one gives a damn about your blog," and explained, "I'm here because I'm qualified to be here." As for his purpose in accepting the school's invite: "I'm not here to get you to buy a CD ... I believe in smart people ... The intelligence in this room is the only thing that can save this country."

Killer Mike is a venerable force. Atlanta's self-described "Pan-Africanist Gangster Rapper, Civic Leader, and Activist" has embarked on a career you could tell your kids about: 12 years of cultural and artistic influence that began with his cohorts in OutKast and propelled through five classic albums, as well as a parallel life as a community leader who's just as regularly called upon by Sharpton's National Action Network as he is by hip-hop radio personalities. With his distinct, gritty-warm tenor and triple-time Southern rap style, he hovers in the top tier of hip-hop artistry, handily linking the day-to-day of the streets with larger sociopolitical issues and the knowledge that they're never separate. He may deploy a lot of adjectives about himself, but most simply, he's a truth-teller.

This 'two bit' Gen X rapper was speaking out about Martin and Davis before BLM was even a thing.

Just because you are ignorant, don't pretend that everyone else is.

By Shaun King

In great part, that's why having a guy like Bernie Sanders win over the endorsement of Killer Mike actually resonates deeply with hip hop heads around the country. Mike is not the type of dude who throws these endorsements out every election year, but it's actually deeper than that. Killer Mike's endorsement of Bernie Sanders was impassioned, well-reasoned, purposeful, and realistic.

SNIP

While conventional wisdom may hold that an endorsement from rappers with singles currently in the top 10 would hold more value, I reject that. By in large, folk don't care what Drake or Future think about politics, but Killer Mike has built real credibility in the activism space and his endorsement mattered. Will it move the needle? It's hard to say, but for a lot of people who love hip hop, the full throttle endorsement Mike gave might just loosen the lid on Bernie's jar a little.

Beyond that, there was precious little said on this whole web site about this little known rapper. None of the people who are just overjoyed and practically braying at the moon over this endorsement were talking about this dude even a year ago. And Lord knows he has never once been subject of conversation in the AA forum or in the AAIG on DU2 though we talk endlessly about politics and hip hop and even Atlanta from time to time in that forum.

The point is all of the braying and high fiving over someone as though their endorsement is so critically important when they have barely garnered 10 lines of text on this web site in the entire of its existence prior to their endorsement of Sanders.

This is not someone that anyone has designated a great thinker or activist or possessed any substantive status in the black community -- until they endorsed Sanders. This is not anyone that anyone seemed to have barely any interest in at all -- until they endorsed Sanders. And now all of a sudden this is the biggest thing that's happened the entire campaign and it's huggh!!11 Seriesly!!!11one. Right.

And wtf the Rand Paul comment has to do with anything even resembling this conversation is something I'll just leave you to chew on. You obviously think that's an important and relevant point. Glad someone does.

Wed Nov 25, 2015, 12:40 PM

I had never heard of her before that all happened.

Sister Souljah (born Lisa Williamson, 1964) is an American hip hop-generation author, activist, recording artist, and film producer. She gained prominence for Bill Clinton's criticism of her remarks about race in the United States during the 1992 presidential campaign. Clinton's well-known repudiation of her comments led to what is now known in politics as a Sister Souljah moment.

Souljah was the executive director of Daddy's House Social Programs Inc., a non-profit corporation for urban youth, financed by Sean Combs and Bad Boy Entertainment.

YOU initiated this conversation with your WELL established and WELL known unprovoked and needless aggression. And then when I respond in kind, I get the "waaahh! Arrogant condescension!11" (though props for spelling both words correctly) as though everyone reading this thread won't see how needlessly nasty you were when you responded to me and STARTED this incredibly pointless exchange.

You are one of a growing group whose posts I have no interest in. I do not even read what you post and would certainly never respond to your posts. Please do us both the immense favor of not responding to mine.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would deny that.

But it was obvious that it was simply a desperate attempt to dismiss Sanders' excellent Civil Rights record.

It's as if to say that economic disenfranchise isn't a problem when, in fact, it's a huge problem and it's at least in the top three of the ways that POC are kept powerless.

The reality is that it's the problem that unites POC and the working poor and immigrants and the rest of us who aren't in the inner circle.

Killer Mike "gets it", and that's threatening to the folks who want to control the message.

Thus, Mike is getting disrespected (but somehow the Kardashian's endorsement of HRC is meaningful).

economic justice to racial justice. You can't be free if you are starving. I think some people like to use a cause to be able to bully others that they label as enemies of their cause. Self-righteous bullying. They don't realize or more likely don't care that they are doing more damage than good for their cause.

"Killer Mike "gets it", and that's threatening to the folks who want to control the message. " Exactly.
