HRC's "baggage" spurs re-think of Democratic nominee

Gripped by the fear that the current frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, has too much “baggage” to win the general election, a concerned contingent of Democrats is pushing to nominate someone who the GOP will find totally acceptable, so as to avoid any unpleasantness leading up to next November’s election.

Their nominee-of-choice, one Jesus Christ, seemed to be the safest choice. However, once his past history was scrutinized, Republicans quickly weighed-in with their objections to The Nazarene’s potential presidential run.

“Born in Bethlehem? Hey, I know what these Jersey kids are like – and it ain’t good.” - Chris Christie

“Jesus? Sounds Mexican to me. Is this guy even in the country legally?” - Donald Trump

“The Prince of Peace? He’ll come after our guns – you know that, right?” - Wayne LaPierre.

“Never married? Hangs out with his twelve buddies? Come on, he’s gay.” - Lindsay Graham

“Feed the hungry? Shelter the homeless? Yeah, say hello to more welfare bums living off the taxpayers’ dime.” - Paul Ryan

“Served loaves and fishes to a multitude – and not a single Republican was invited.” - Jeb Bush

“Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s? Kiss those tax loopholes and offshore accounts goodbye, my fellow 1%ers.” - Mitt Romney

“Able to cure the sick without them paying up front? Sounds like that dreaded socialized medicine to me!” - Ben Carson

“So he was sent here by God, his father? Uh, I don’t think so – just ask my dad.” - Ted Cruz

“Love your enemies? Typical bleeding-heart liberal who thinks we should cave to terrorists.” - Michele Bachman

“Can turn water into wine? As an expert on water consumption, I can assure you this is impossible.” - Marco Rubio

“So his mom was a virgin when she conceived. Why is that so hard to believe about my daughter – twice?” - Sarah Palin

“So we should give up worldly possessions in order to follow him? This man is obviously some kind of crack-pot!” - Pat Robertson

“Blessed are the peacemakers? That phrase sounds like a smoking gun that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.” - Dick Cheney

“He’s actually the anti-Christ – and I can prove it with a blackboard and a piece of chalk.” - Glenn Beck

“Love my neighbor? I can’t even remember how many houses I own. So how am I supposed to know who my neighbors are, no less how I feel about them?” - John McCain

“Be my brother’s keeper? Look, I’ve already advised Jeb on how to keep the country safe from terrorist attacks. And I still can’t keep him from losing. How much more of this keepin’ stuff am I supposed to do?” - George W. Bush

“Sure the guy was scourged, tortured and crucified – but did he ever suffer the humiliation of riding a school bus while wearing breadbags over his sandals?” - Joni Ernst

“I have never seen a single photograph of this Christ person wearing a sweater vest. I rest my case.” - Rick Santorum

“Have you seen the pics of this guy on the cross? Looks to me like he’s wearing a diaper. Why is that okay for him, and not an honest Republican like me?” – David Vitter

“Jesus and I went to high school together. Didn’t like him then, and don’t like him now.” - Phyllis Schafly

History tells us that no matter who the Democrats proffer as their standard-bearer going into a general election, the Republicans will be digging up "baggage" that will be exploited by the GOP - and whether that "baggage" is a result of fact or fiction is of little consequence. It will be repeated, regurgitated, spewed by pundits, headlined by the MSM, and endlessly opined upon by political "journalists" who wouldn't recognize a fact if it bit them in the ass

That being said, one wonders what kind of "Democrats" think appeasing the Republicans by NOT standing behind the clear choice of our own Party (whoever that may be) is a good idea. One wonders why some "Democrats" think we should instead take the GOP's perspective on our chosen candidate under serious consideration before WE decide who WE want to be our standard-bearer next November.

I don't know which is more politically naive: thinking that the Republicans will leave any Democratic nominee unscathed, or believing that any Democratic nominee cannot - and will not - be the victim of endless attacks by the opposing party.

I will stand with whoever my Party chooses as their nominee - and I will never allow the Republicans to define who that nominee should be.

1. Excellent post, Nance: both humorous and serious.

I don't know which is more politically naive: thinking that the Republicans will leave any Democratic nominee unscathed, or believing that any Democratic nominee cannot - and will not - be the victim of endless attacks by the opposing party.

Good points!

I will stand with whoever my Party chooses as their nominee - and I will never allow the Republicans to define who that nominee should be.

Hear! Hear! Any one of our candidates is infinitely better than the best candidate on the GOP side. Hands down.

And they will use anything - real or imagined - against the Dem nominee. This should be obvious to people.

14. The only things I have ever said "against Bernie" ...

... are that he consistently demeaned the Democratic Party until he found it politically expedient to "join" the Party when he had to, and that he has been rattling off the same laundry list of complaints about what's wrong with the country for decades, without any sign that he has actually DONE anything about those complaints.

How that ties into what I've said here about Republicans is anybody's guess.

7. Of all the candidates that are running this and next year - Democratic, republican, or independent..

....the one that would be able to handle and throttle false claims of "baggage" would be Hillary Clinton. She's been doing it since the 1980s.

From the phony Whitewater "scandal", to the Rose Law firm false accusations, to the slanderous "hints" about Vince Foster (which reared it's ugly head here on DU the last day or two), and most recently the digging into her health history. She fends them all off, each and every time coming out stronger more resolute.

So, bring on the "baggage" folks - the only real baggage she has will be delivered to the White House on January 20, 2017, and all the other candidates will be sent packing!

48. Good post!

And solid reasons why Hillary Clinton is the Democratic Party front-runner. After the last Benghazi hearing, she just knocked it out of the park for me.

She's a formidable opponent and can stand toe-to-toe with anyone - and win. She convinced me that she can get things done for the good of the country.

Six Republican attorneys-turned-politicans did their best, wielding all their years of experience as litigators to have her slip up. She faced them alone, she stood her ground, and she even corrected them. She came out looking stronger than any of them. She showed, during those long hours just how tough she is - and how presidential. She showed a remarkable, almost photographic memory, and she showed me that she's the one to succeed President Obama and will probably get more things done even with a Teabagger House.

So let them do their best. Let them hurl all kinds of nit-picked "baggage" at her. It won't stop her from reaching the White House, giving us another eight years that a Democrat leads this country.

20. I've never really understood the "baggage" scenario applied to Clinton

Last edited Tue Dec 1, 2015, 11:18 AM - Edit history (1)

Oh don't get me wrong, Hillary has a past where baggage has been manufactured and greatly emphasized. She has always been in the GOP spotlight. They've seen this possible Whitehouse win coming for the last 12 years and have had years to create that baggage. It would seems that most of it is seen for what it is, and frankly it is starting to play against them by berning out the public. But the bottom line is that we pretty much know the "baggage" that the GOP has against Hillary. If Bernie is the nominee, he will not be able to avoid his own significant "baggage". To assume otherwise is naive.

Yes, Bernie will be on the receiving end of attacks.

However.

Deep down, I'm certain that if they had their way, they would like Hillary to be the nominee. She's the one they can use to fire their base up just by mentioning her name. She's the one who can be counted upon to NOT fire up her own base. She's the one who, should she win, will ensure the continuation of politics as usual - which they all want.

So, I agree with you that we should not allow the Republicans to define who our nominee will be; but although there are some little-r republicans (who are probably closer to the center than most) who like Bernie, the big-R Republican Party fears him and would prefer not to have to run against him.

41. I bet that took you most of the day.

I also bet no one whose support goes to someone other than the Chief Baggage Handler herself read more than a paragraph or two.

Long though... must be some important shit in a post that long.

they cannot wait to vote for her. Smart GOPers around here will tell me they fear her winning, because they know their candidates are all dumbfucks. Or they like Trump...which is good since he has no chance.

The stupid GOPers around here don't vote they just talk a big game. Fuck them let them talk.

53. For the baggage concerned contingents of the world, a little history:

All of the stuff thrown at Hillary now, was tossed at her and Bill in the 1990s. The GOP Operation Chaos crowd know full well it is NOT a matter of her being unelectable, because:

After the well-funded and media-driven smears - often by the same pundits who got their start back in the 1990s:

They FAILED.

How did they FAIL?

Bill Clinton was elected in the face of the storm they brought against him and he was re-elected despite the tornado unleashed by the right in his first term.

Why did they FAIL?

Despite the ubiquitous use of media, they were unable to brainwash most of the public in the 1990s. They saw through the bull and could see there's a great difference in the two parties. There's no reason to think that those who remember those years will fall for it now.

Why will they FAIL AGAIN?

And they are recycling the same manure they dished out back then, and it will fail unless the gullible fall for it. This is not the fault of the Clintons or the party they represent, it's the gullibility of the hysterical people who have fallen for the idea that the GOP really does control the minds of all Americans.

I refuse to listen to or be intimidated by those who aren't Democrats and try to order me around and tell what a true Democrat is by using talking points of the Republican party.

I agree with Obama, who knew exactly what he was up against politically and faced all the unpleasant realities head on:

Those refusing to get with the Democrats need to stop trying to shine us on about our cause. The GOP nor its listeners haven't addressed one thing of true substance to Americans.

Why are they desperate?

Why are they trying so hard to make sure Clinton doesn't attain office they'll dredge up and promote absolutely anything?

They see her as the true end of the status quo. The liberation of women around the planet will change the economic, social and environmental dynamics of the world. She has devoted her life to this and never missed a chance to champion while she is surrounded by crickets, even by those who claim to be the best people in the Democratic Party.

It is and has always been about the means of human reproduction. Empower women with the freedom to choose to have children or not, allowing them to live at full capacity and participate. It will help end wars from the lack of cannon fodder and the pressure to regiment the masses; ease the root cause of ecological disaster by lowering the birth rate; it will relieve the pressures that lead to undemocratic institutions and governments.

There is enough at stake that the right saw all along, which is that a feminist who has worked on the cause of women's freedom for decades in the most personal and effective way in a harsh environment did get things done.

They see their doom and will lie, cheat, steal and even kill to keep the status quo going. For them, I sing the words of the REM song:

'It's the end of the world as we know it. And I feel fine!'

LOL at those who can't see the justice of freeing half of the human race, the GOP is a sick joke!

And ROTFLMAO at the OP!

65. Hillary has proven she can win the counter attacks. Over and over she makes the GOP look stupid.

We really don't know what Bernie can do if he faced a real repub battle. He's really never even faced a solid opposition in Vermont. The intel is there and has surfaced, but generally been ignored. Bernie has plenty of dirt and soft points.

So far, Bernie's temper, inability to respond outside the box, lack of broad-based experience, and weak advertisements bode poorly for a GE campaign that would defend against a billion dollar war chest.

Nice post, NG. The point is well-taken. I like your creative OP, and it makes sense for this election. It also helps demonstrate why a nationally experienced candidate should be the Democratic nominee.

Too bad that there's a subgroup that targets long-time Democrats and takes over threads so that reasonable discussion can take place. They ignore the TOS, post personal attacks, and swam like piranha. That's bad for DU, and hurts the candidate that they claim to support.

82. Reagan was in no way, shape or form a liberal

He sicced the National Guard on students at Berkeley as governor of California.
He claimed that trees caused more pollution than cars.
He fired members of PATCO, an air traffic controllers union.
He got involved in a stupid Mid-East conflict, and when that blew up in his face, he invaded a tiny Carribean nation.
He honored German war criminals at Bitburg Cemetery.
He constantly disparaged the poor and the disadvantaged.
His trickle-down voodoo economics doubled the national deficit in just 8 years.
His environmental policies sucked big time (James Watt, Anne Gorsuch).
He made off-the-cuff remarks about bombing the Soviet Union.
His attorney general, Edwin Meese, commented that "of course all suspects are guilty, otherwise they wouldn't be suspects".
He raised income taxes on the bottom income earners, while reducing taxes on the top earners (from 70% to 28%), and reduced capital gains taxes as well. He also increased the FICA payroll taxes on the bottom earners.
He followed the Kissinger Doctrine of overthrowing left-leaning Latin American governments.

In short, he was, and still is, the holy icon for conservatives.
