Republicans love America (wait for it...)
the way some conservative love their gay children.
They love the image of their children, not the children themselves. They love the child that doesn't challenge, represents them in the way they wish to be represented by their offspring, and whom reassures them that they way things were when they were young, is still the way things are now. In other words, a child who is straight--like mom and dad.
The child that controls their own body, loves, and lives based on their own plan, clearly needs tough love. They can be changed ("we can change that..."
through religion, and discipline, and compassionate American family values.
That's also exactly how Republicans see America. This country is a wayward child, and Republicans want to get America back in the same way that want to keep their children as children.
In their hearts, Republicans feel betrayed by America. We didn't grow up just they way they expected, so they want to cut us off financially, till we see the error of our ways. Son Billy wants to take James to the Prom, daughter Sally goes to a clinic for exams and birth control, and on top of everything else, Grandma is seeing a nice black man -- and all of this is just messy and annoying.
This is where Republicans see themselves. The rest of don't have civil rights, we have dysfunctions.
No one would ever choose to grow up in that kind of family, why the hell would we want to grow up in that kind of country?
