1. some of this is quite deliberate lying.

sure, some of it is ignorance.

but some of it is from a few republicans who are SO partisan that even though they may know the facts, they're not willing to give obama credit, they want to "catapult the propaganda", they want to give their guy credit because they think saying so will help their chances in november.

3. Pollsters normally have the ability to follow up on "outlier"responses--- to probe when

certain responses are so extreme that they don't makes sense or if they believe that they are being manipulated intentionally-- at least request permission to contact again for later follow-up..

I guess they did not choose to do so in this case.

6. what's interesting is that they even chose to ASK the question.

note that one known source of polling error is that if you offer a choice, some people will take it, even if they NEVER would have volunteered it.

ask the question "who wrote the declaration of independence", and let them come up with the names, NO ONE would volunteer josef stalin.

but if you make it a multiple choice and offer:

a) jefferson
b) stalin
c) unsure

i can guarantee you that some non-trivial percentage of americans will answer stalin.

8. I remember Bill Maher once said on Larry King . . .

That there's about 20% of the population that is just stupid. At the time, I wondered if that was too harsh or unfair.

I now see that Bill Maher was right.

30% believe Elvis works at the corner gas station. It doesn't matter. Those people are unreachable. They have their own reality.

But as someone else pointed out, why the hell would they ask such a question. If they are going to ask that, why not throw a birther question in for good measure?

Or, how he was involved in the whole thing at all. It would be entertaining, and I could use the laugh.
