Dear Hillary, Let Me Introduce You to My Abuela

<snip>

Dear Hillary,

Yesterday, a post appeared on your blog titled "8 Ways Hillary Clinton Is Just Like Your Abuela." Many Latinxs took offense to this article. My friends at Latino Rebels published a response to your blog post, including a round up of Twitter reactions, found here: http://www.latinorebels.com/2015/12/22/just-when-you-thought-hillary-clinton-couldnt-hispander-any-more-she-did-it-again/

Your post also troubles me. Not only because it says you "care about children everywhere," yet you once said Central American refugee children "should be sent back." Not even because you've once again appropriated our language and our culture when it's convenient for your political agenda. I'm upset because of my real, flesh-and-blood abuela, because your narrative erases her reality.

Let me introduce you to my abuela.

My abuela grew up in Buenos Aires in the 1930s and '40s. An orphan, she lived in a nunnery until the age of 18 and, later, with the family whose children she nannied until she met and married my grandfather. My abuela lived through Argentina's Great Depression, through a violent military coup in 1976, through thousands of deaths and disappearances during what is now known as the "Dirty War."

She cried when Evita died. She cried when her husband died of cancer. She cried when she heard that thousands of young boys who could have been her sons died in a failed attempt to save Las Islas Malvinas from the United Kingdom. My grandmother's life was not just the pain of imperialism and the suffering brought on by a cruel political system, however. In 1964, her only son -- my father -- was born.

In 1983, she returned to the polls to choose a president in the new democracy. In 1990, she saw her son marry the love of his life. The next year, she held her first grandchild in her arms for the first time. You see, Hillary, my abuela is nothing like you.

In 1999, my abuela was once again left orphaned when my parents, my sister and I were pushed out of Argentina for economic reasons and forced to resettle in the United States. While Hillary lived in the White House, my sister and I lived apart from our only living grandmother.

Separated from her for six years, we were unable to feel our abuela's love. Meanwhile, she was kept from the only family she had left. In 2005...

1. But but Hillary ate at Chipotle!

Seriously, Hillary is kind of tone deaf on ethnic issues. It was so off-putting in 2008 and she is still doing it.

Gut retching kidney destroying bacterial snipers!

Free of GMOs =/= free of E. Coli

Hopefully they fix that soon. I like the concept of Chipotle. I like the menu. But hopefully they can pull back on the arrogance and snark, and fix this problem before the chain implodes.

Getting back to Sen Sanders vs Sec Clinton - I hope Sen Sanders wins, as he cares the most about working folks like me. But I will enthusiastically support whoever the nominee is, and I hope the rest of Sen Sanders' supporters will as well.

77. It is a takeoff on Meher Baba, Pete Townsend is a follower of his

Townshend showed no predilection for religious belief in the first years of the Who's career. By the beginning of 1968, however, Townshend had begun to explore spiritual ideas. In January 1968, The Who recorded his song "Faith in Something Bigger" (Odds & Sods). Townshend's art school friend Mike McInnerney gave him a copy of C. B. Purdom's book The God-Man, introducing him to the writings of the Indian "perfect master" Meher Baba, who blended elements of Vedantic, Sufi, and Mystic schools.

Townshend swiftly absorbed all of Baba's writings that he could find; by April 1968, he announced himself Baba's disciple. At about this time, Townshend, who had been searching the past two years for a basis for a rock opera, created a story inspired by the teachings of Baba and other writings and expressing the enlightenment he believed that he had received from them, which ultimately became Tommy.[98] Tommy did more than revitalise the Who's career (which was moderately successful at this point but had reached a plateau); it also marked a renewal of Townshend's songwriting and his spiritual studies infused most of his work from Tommy forward, including the unfinished Who project Lifehouse. The Who song "Baba O'Riley", written for Lifehouse and eventually appearing on the album Who's Next, was named for Meher Baba and minimalist composer Terry Riley. His newfound passion was not shared by his bandmates, whose attitude was tolerant, but who were unwilling to become the spokesmen for a particular religion. Few of the thousands of fans who packed stadiums across Europe and the US to see the Who noticed the religious message in the songs: that "Bargain" and the middle section of "Behind Blue Eyes" from Who's Next and "Listening To You" from Tommy were all originally written as prayers, that "Drowned" from Quadrophenia and "Don't Let Go The Coat" from Face Dances were based on Baba's sayings, that the "who are you, who, who, who, who" chorus from the song "
Who Are You" was based on Sufi chants, or that "Let My Love Open The Door" was not a message from a lover but from God.

35. I don't think so.

Babushka

Babushka, or granny, is the mother of a person's father or mother, but in this country the word has numerous shades of meanings. The very word babushka is a diminutive-hypocoristic form of the word baba – an ancient Russian word denoting a married woman. It is not by chance that today the word has acquired its pet suffix – it is in fact an illustration of just how special babushkas are to Russians.

She was my hero, my sweet mom and my dad ... oh god. There aren't words. 36. "Central American children sent back": 70,000 children w/no parent were sent here.

Central American parents were sending their small children here ALONE.

It wasn't just a few children and it wasn't all children fleeing danger.

And it was grossly irresponsible to send a message this was appropriate.

Clinton drew a distinction last year between migrants who crossed the border illegally for economic or family reasons and refugees whose lives would be in danger if they were deported. She favored returning migrant children to “responsible adults in their families” back in Central America. But she also said that she would not deport children who had “a legitimate claim for asylum” and “would face some terrible danger if they return.”

49. Nearly all of the children qualified for asylum even if "responsible adults" are found.

Last year, RAICES carried out more than 2,400 legal intakes for unaccompanied minors in need of lawyers. The group found that 63 percent of these minors were “obvious winners” for claims of asylum or other relief because their circumstances closely paralleled those seen in other, earlier cases in which asylum had been awarded. Even among the rest of the minors, Ryan said the vast majority still had a fighting chance to move forward with a claim for humanitarian relief.

Those assessments are playing out in court. RAICES has won 98 percent of the cases for unaccompanied minors its lawyers have taken on, Ryan says.

“Last summer, when politicians from both parties were making statements that these children were not refugees, that these children all needed to be sent home, my agency was busy speaking with these children,” Ryan told HuffPost. “The same statements that Clinton made last summer are the same statements being made to legitimize the family detention that she is now apparently against. Whether it’s [Republican presidential candidate] Mr. [Donald] Trump or Mrs. Clinton, these knee-jerk statements don’t do anything to protect children, and they certainly don’t do anything to protect vulnerable refugees.”

Ashley Feasley, the advocacy director for Catholic Legal Immigration Network, said her group has had a similar experience.

“We at CLINIC know from representing immigrant children that when they have access to legal representation, they’re usually able to obtain protection under U.S. law -- and that’s because in many cases, these children are fleeing persecution, targeted violence and gang recruitment,” Feasley told HuffPost. “The emergency for unaccompanied minor children is not over now that it’s moved away from the border. It’s now in our courtrooms. We have vulnerable children who cannot access justice in our legal system today. And that’s an emergency.”

havoc in the lives of mllions, more probably, those who survived them and Hillary, war hawk that she is, thinks people don't get that when American politicians pretend they identify with large voting blocs while at the same time advocating for the US to be the policemen of the world regardless of the horrors we inflict in that, they are not just being ridiculous, they are insulting the intelligence of those whose families suffered under their policies.

Airc, Hillary is a huge admirer of Henry Kissinger. While it appears we have people who don't know a whole lot, or care for that matter when it comes to their biases, about how our foreign policies have affected the people whose nations we have been intervening in, mostly on the side of dictators.

Odd that you should interpret that remark as Hillary reading to you rather than to her own grandchild.

And BTW, Hispanics have a long, close history with Hillary and Bill Clinton, who registered S. Texas voters during the unsettled days of la huelga and la raza unida.

69. This is not Hillary's finest moment

But this response seems odd to me. Hillary was not suggesting that her life has been the same as that of this woman's abuela, just that she can relate to grandmotherly things. Hillary can be a tad awkward, and this is most certainly one of those cases. And yes, I can see why this can be perceived as condescending. She deserves to be criticized for this awkward business. But I don't understand this particular criticism.

As an immigrant (non-Hispanic) myself, I know what it is like to be separated from your loved ones. We too were driven here due to economic circumstances. I saw my dad only a handful of times in the last 18 years of his life, and spent only one Christmas with him in all those years. I see my mom every year or two, my cousins and uncles and aunts (to whom I am very attached) once every few years. My daughter is growing up without cousins or grandparents. That is tough. This is not unique to the experience of Hispanics. (Indeed, I envy them the rich cultural presence that they have in the United States. I don't know what it is like to have a community of immigrants that speak my own language all around me.)

From my own experience, I kind of get how this woman feels about her grandmother, but I don't really understand what she is trying to say. It's no more Hillary's fault that her grandmother had a hard life, than that my grandmother had a hard life. Now, to be sure, Hillary did not make an awkward ad about how she's "just like my ouma," so perhaps I just don't get it. But still, all that this ad shows is that Hilary tries too hard to soften her image (I feel kind of sorry for her when she feels she has to do that), and that she can be a bit tone deaf.

94. The immigrant experience is hard and wonderful..

no matter where you are coming from, no matter if it was happy choice or a decision to save the family.

I think this woman wrote this, not really to blame Hillary for the lives they lived because of the state of Argentina, but that it differs so vastly from Hillary and her immediate family's situation.

I am half Native American and Mexican from my father's side and Irish from my mother's side.

The history of my direct ancestors is one of hardship. The Irish side landed in N. Carolina in 1848. The Mexican side crossed the border in 1905 or there abouts and the Native side was pushed onto reservation in 1854 according to this;
http://redcliff-nsn.gov/divisions/TNRD/H.htm

We don't feel the reverberations of the Irish immigration, too many generations removed. The Native and Mexican is still felt. My grandparents lived through it. My grandmother, was naturalized in 1911 long before my grandfather was recognized as an American.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Citizenship_Act
1924.

My grandmother, mi abuela, didn't go to high school, she lived a poor but faithful to the church existence. She lived with my grandfather, who was so wounded by Indian School that he continued a cycle of violence to his son and then unto us. She could not leave him because of her faith, her family and society. She had few options.

We still feel the reverberations of scars, racism, imperialism, dislocation and shame of who we are.

This is not Hilary's experience. That is what I get from all of this "non-scandal" as some stupid poster wrote. It is only a non-scandal if you are not hurt. That is crazy. I empathize with the stories of immigrants all over this world. It is a tough thing to be an outsider to a hostile host.
