2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Socialist," Rat-Headed Carnival Barker, Dr. NutJob, and Crazy Ted won't be president.
The American electorate will not vote in a self-declared socialist with a platform of an ENDLESS litany of government programs. The GOP would have a field day shouting "SELF-DECLARED SOCIALIST" from the rooftops night and day. Sanders would get DESTROYED with the GOP attacks over his self-declared socialism. Also, he and his supporters need to stop the hypocrisy of saying they are being "treated unfairly by the DNC" given that Sanders is not even a real Democrat. He is an independent who has trashed the Democratic Party time and again over the years and who has now opportunistically joined the party because he admittedly knows he would never have ANY hope in hell of winning the presidency at all without a party affiliation. He IS being treated fairly and he shouldn't have many complaints given his years of trashing the party. (Boy, the Dems looked REAL GOOD when he NEEDED them, right?) (Don't get me wrong. Bernie is a good man with very good intentions. But he can't and won't win the nomination.)
And forget the Rat-Headed Racist Ugly-As-Sin Carnival Barker who is Trump. He may well get the Crazy Party's nomination, but he ain't gonna win the general election.
Forget Crazy Ted Cruz. He's a nut.
And forget Doctor NutJob Carson.
The best hope for the GOP is probably Rubio or Kasich. All others are non-starters in the general election.
Hillary is the overwhelming favorite to win the Dem nomination and would be heavily favored in the general election.

Want to talk about socialist programs, look at corporate America... Hillary's world.
A lot of Republicans love socialism as it stands today. They bitch about food stamps but really food stamps are a gift to Walmart stockholders. Every dollar paid in food stamps is a dollar Walmart does not need to pay it's employees. The poor do not benefit, they work to sustain themselves. Stockholders benefit.
Endless war means endless profits. Our tax dollars are making war mongers rich while we are just creating more threats that demand more war.
The task is to show that all Americans deserve the benefits of our tax dollars, not just the wealthy and corporations.

(48,181 posts)Your first paragraph was supposed to be about how Sanders could not win the general election, but ends up in the middle veering off into how he is not a proper Democrat (he isn't, proper Democratic candidates are bought and paid for by Wall Street) and therefore can't win the nomination. That is really two separate themes and ought to be two separate paragraphs, or perhaps two separate horseshitty hit pieces on Sanders.
Look, I get it, you don't like social security, medicare, unemployment insurance, the affordable care act, OSHA, the FDA, the EPA, the SEC, etc. The very idea of comprehensive universal single payer healthcare gives you the hives. For you education should not be free, it should be expensive, very expensive, and should be a huge barrier to a truly egalitarian meritocracy. You're a modern corporate neoliberal post new deal reagan democrat, and Clinton is your horse in this race. Considering where you stand politically, it is clear who is the best candidate for you.

I can always expect brilliant writing like this when reading something from the Hillary camp.

(5,279 posts)Do you know that "Socialism" came into being because it was based on the United States. Our Constitution is a socialist document, and our continued existence is an ongoing socialist "proof of concept".
Socialism isn't designed as a counter to capitalism, but monarchy. You have heard of the Declaration of Independence? It is a socialistic expulsion of a ruling class who based their authority to rule on the divine right of kings (remember the De Vinci Code? That "shocker" wasn't unknown to European royalty).
The divine right of kings to rule has metamorphosed into the sublime right of money to rule. It remains a situation of "Nobility" riding on the backs of "peasants". The only difference it who the nobility prays to.

(1,089 posts)of a litany of government programs designed to protect the corporations from their own losses at the expense of the individuals who actually pay more than their share of taxes already. Seems to me that's basically socialism for corporations. Guess what? That's what's been happening for a long time now, and it isn't working.
I don't know the poster who put up the OP, but in my experience the people who constantly scream, "SOCIALIST" or "SOCIALISM" really don't know what it means. It was used early on in Obama's presidency by the same people who claimed to support the CONSTITUTION but obviously had no freaking idea what was in it when you asked them even one question.
Point is, if it's Hillary that's the nominee, great. We should all want her to win. If it's somehow Sanders, I don't think screaming 'socialist' is going to have any negative effect on his electoral totals whatsoever. Ignorant arguments are easy to debunk, and Sanders has been effectively debunking this one for a long time.
