2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumURGENT TIME to help Wayne Powell kick Cantor OUT!
People say I can't win because we are up against Eric Cantor's millions and that every outside Super PAC and corporate-backed interest will swoop in to protect Cantor. But, I think it is time we show people-powered movements can win! That's where you come in.
Tonight, my team and I are going to make budget decisions for our next ad. If we want to expose the truth about Cantor, we are going to need it to be big. Problem is - we are still $6,114 short. Can I count on you today?
Contribute now to help us before tonight's big budget deadline. It's time to defeat Cantor.
The 7th District has watched as the most dysfunctional Congress in American history has put our nation on a path toward total economic collapse. Eric Cantor is the leader of that Congress. I believe that when given a choice of "red versus blue" or "red, white, and blue," the 7th District will choose "red, white, and blue." That's why I can win.
But, one thing we know for sure is, we can't do it without your support.
Chip in today. Even $5 can go a long way.
Onward,
Wayne

(94,503 posts)Every rating group (Cook, Rothenberg, Sabato, NY Times, Roll Call) rates this as a Safe Republican District; it has not had a Democrat in the seat since 1970. Our ability to win the House depends on picking up Net +25. Our ability to win Virginia for the President depends on turning out Democratic voters in Districts where they exist in enough quantity to make a difference. If you want to volunteer for Wayne Powell, go for it. But, spending money on this race, sadly, means not spending the same amount on a race (either in Virginia or elsewhere) that's competitive.
I don't say this lightly; I've volunteered on many campaigns that were long-shots, and as someone who can help with funding, I get a lot of calls from people like Wayne. But, money isn't infinite, and there are over 100 House and Senate races which are more competitive than Virginia-7. I don't dole out my money where it will make me feel good; I send it where it will make a difference.

(130,865 posts)YOU ARE NOT HELPING THIS URGENT EFFORT.
You, Cook, Rothenberg, Sabato, NY Times and Roll Call are NOT on the ground in Virginia, and apparently have no understanding about the urgent need to get rid of the plague cantor represents and spreads.
I am VERY SORRY that you, and perhaps the DNC, feel and act in this way. MAYBE that's why we have the Congress we have today?
brooklynite
(94,503 posts)...especially if you see something happening "on the ground". His ground game may have an impact; so may the debates. But cash is a different matter. Cantor has 20X the war chest. Raising money this late simply isn't going to have an impact. And the $$ you're raising here could be going to Jim Graves, who's close to tied with Michele Bachmann. Or to Alan Grayson, who has a chance at a comeback in Florida.
elleng
(130,865 posts)that the extent of his 'ground game' is related to the funds he has to enable him to spread the word on the ground?
Raising money 'this late' isn't going to have an impact? Because all the voters in VA7 KNOW they have a choice now? Because cantor has told them this? Because DNC has told them this? THAT is a very foolish argument, imo.
Do you recognize the extent to which cantor is disliked, both in his district and around the country, and how MANY will go a long way to shipping him out? AND how important cantor is to the games repugs play, in Congress???
brooklynite
(94,503 posts)...because I've seen no evidence presented. And searching for evidence is something I do to sort through the myriad requests for funding I get. Trust me, I've NEVER gotten a call from a candidate who told me they were badly behind, even in the reddest of red districts. On the other hand, I -HAVE- seen evidence that Bachmann is in trouble; I -HAVE- seen evidence that Grayson is being; and I -HAVE- seen evidence that Republican legislatures and Republican Governors draw redistricting lines to protect their incumbents and make their districts as uncompetitive as possible.

(8,434 posts)We've had an earthquake that destroyed a school and homes. Cantors reply was that any aid must be preceded by cuts to social spending. In the end the only thing that was made available were 0% interest loans from FEMA. WTF do you do with a new loan when you're already upside down on the value.
Cantor stood with McDonnell on the trans vaginal ultrasound bill that was passed in VA. Women are furious.
Cantor wants to raise our taxes so that they can be passed on to the wealthy.
Cantor wants to overturn the ACA, which will cost millions to district 7 residents in drug costs alone!
The people in district 7 are pissed! There are very few Cantor signs out in the yards and bumper stickers for him are nearly non existent. The phrase I have heard over and over is "anyone but Cantor."
How do I know all this? I live in VA district 7. Right smack in the middle of it.
The fact is Cantor only took this district with 59% of the vote in 2010, the year of the bagger. This election can be won by Powell as long as people find ways to help instead of shitting on the opportunity.
Edit to add:
Finally, why do you think you haven't heard about Powell and the real threat he is to Cantor? Because TPTB don't want you to hear it. He is the voice of the movement to destroy every social program in America and send the money that pays for them to his rich friends who happen to own a majority of the media.

(130,865 posts)Wonder why???

(8,434 posts)You're here being negative about the campaign. Why? My guess is you haven't heard squat about it.
You say Bachmann is at risk. Why is that? Because the TV (or other major news source) told you so. Whats changed in her district? Not much. She's still the village idiot, but she's always been that. The real change is that TPTB are realizing her mouth is getting in the way of their plans.
District 7 in VA has been crippled by a smooth talking intelligent Republican. The voters here aren't suddenly realizing he's an idiot, they are realizing he is out to kill them. I mean that literally. Cantor wants to raise our taxes, eliminate our safety net, and work us without any health care until we fall over and die. We just have to make sure we make babies to replace ourselves first.
The question I really have for you is why are you shitting on this opportunity?
I won't claim to understand if you don't want to help us. If that's the case though, we would prefer you get out of our way. Even if it is a long shot, it's worth the effort elleng, myself, and many district 7 residents are putting into this race.
To continue trashing this effort we are making is to say you like Cantor, approve of the job he does, and will do anything to stand in the way of removing him from office.

I thought DU was about organizing and helping to get D's elected, not shitting on genuine blue D's trying to get dangerous R's out of office.
It maybe a long shot but I would rather we go down fighting. cantor is a moron and doesn't deserve the job he is in.
I pray my 50 dollars leads to Cantor's unemployment
