In 2016, can we please go with "Clinton Supporters," "Sanders Supporters," or "O'Malley Supporters"?

It's getting really frustrating to see all the childish nicknames each side is using against the others. Whether it's "Berniacs'" "Berniebots,"Hillarians," or "Camp Weathervane," it's not constructive in any way. At the end of the day, we're all Democrats (I hope) and we all will have to come together within the next 11 months.

And please, I'm not talking about the silly nicknames people give their own side. Just the ones that are clearly meant to be insults.

On the old DU terms like "Obamabots" would get a post deleted. We've slipped here this time around.

To me, "fans" connotes more unthinking enthusiasm than considered judgment.

Every candidate has some supporters who have, in fact, not employed considered judgment in reaching their preference, but there's no reason to broad-brush the entire community.

I don't recommend holding your breath waiting for it to happen.

In case you haven't noticed, there are far more ways to insult people's intelligence than just using a silly name to describe them. Personally, I care fuckall what juvenile names I get called, but I damn sure care when some asshat thinks they can put a of bowl of bullshit in front of me and think calling it ice cream will fool me.

Perhaps growing a thicker skin might improve your online experience.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

YOUR COMMENTS

WTF? If we can't insult each other with stupid names here, where can we insult each other? This post, advocating civil discussion here in GDP is clearly a violation of community standards!

I haven't been to Freerepublic in years, but I used to laugh/puke at their childish nicknames: Hitlery Klintoon, Odumbo, Obummer, etc.
it is really distressing to see that crap here.
Regardless of whom you support now or will vote for, all three Dem candidates are superior public servants and stand head and shoulders above the craven bigots in the other side.

So, we immediately identify a disrespect. Those conversations are not fun for me. Those type of conversations do not do much for me.

So, there is the upside. It allows me to quickly identify who I really do not want to waste my time, reading.

Bernie Sanders was elected Mayor of Burlington in 1981, when the Reagan administration was working toward the violent overthrow of Nicaragua's left-wing Sandinista government (which had overthrown a U.S.-backed dictator). Sanders's supporters jokingly called themselves Sanderistas. I don't see that term as pejorative. Today, many people wouldn't even catch the reference, but it does pair Sanders's name with opposition to that kind of U.S. foreign policy (seen more recently in the State Department's response to the 2009 coup in Honduras).

What about "Clintonite"? I usually think of -ite as a neutral suffix (unlike -bot). I don't recall seeing "Sandersite" because the "s" at the end of his name makes the term much less euphonious. Do Clinton supporters think that the shorthand "Clintonite" is offensive?

"Hillarians" is a novel construction this year. Hillary Clinton has the advantage of high name recognition, so that she can use just her given name. (Note that most candidates' logos use their surnames; a few use their given names; only Clinton's uses just the initial of her given name.) To the extent that Clinton's favorable-unfavorable rating suffers from the perception that she is a coldly calculating politician, associating her with hilarity might help soften her image, but it might also convey a lack of seriousness on the part of her supporters.

I've seen "Camp Weathervane" only with reference to decisions by Clinton or her campaign. Those uses are within the bounds of legitimate criticism. I would not apply that term to Clinton supporters.

" I am a shi'te Clintonite." Say it outloud, it was pretty brilliant. I liked Bill back then, too so I remembered it.

Then Super Tuesday2008, the real Bill and Hill came out and the was when I left the couple behind.
