"Hey, I Like Hillary Clinton Too"

KEVIN DRUM
Hey, I Like Hillary Clinton Too

Sady Doyle:

I’ve come to believe that saying nice things about Hillary Clinton can be a subversive act.

Well, I don't know about subversive. A little unusual, maybe, but that's all. So what accounts for Doyle's affection for Hillary? Basically, the fact that Hillary is still alive and kicking after spending nearly her entire life on the receiving end of attacks that would turn most of us into sobbing wrecks who refuse to answer the doorbell:

It’s almost as if, after a quarter-century of being attacked for her appearance, personality, and every waking move, breath, and word, Hillary Clinton is highly conscious of how she is perceived and portrayed, and is trying really hard to monitor her own behavior and behave in ways people will accept. Which is “disgusting,” of course. We want “authentic” candidates. Remind me: How well did the public and media react the last time she appeared in public without makeup? Or raised her voice? Or laughed? Or went to the goddamn bathroom? Or did any “authentic” thing that a real-life person does every day?

and starting negotiations on a minimum wage at $12.00/hr..

I am sure she is a nice person, but her policies suck.

rather than a minimum wage, should be the way to go. Cost of living differs significantly from place to place. From what I understand, Hillary suggested that a minimum of $12, with $15 in some locations, might be a more sensible way to go. You might not agree, that I can understand, but Hillary's position is not a simple sell-out either. She clearly wants to raise the minimum wage, but she also wants to protect small businesses and jobs. Economics if often a matter of balance.

5. The public does not really want an authentic Hillary

An authentic Hilary's voice is called "shrill."
An authentic Hillary's laugh is called "cackling."
An authentic Hillary's last name is "Rodham."
An authentic Hillary does not bake cookies.
An authentic Hillary's clothes are probably casual slacks and soft T-shirts or maybe pantsuits.
An authentic Hillary's hair is probably gray and limp
An authentic Hillary goes to the bathroom and takes a bit too long to come back, and gets a lot of criticism for it
An authentic Hillary's opinions are probably pretty progressive, but she has learned to be very careful about what can be achieved in this country.

No, the public does not want an authentic Hillary. When she said she does not bake cookies, and when she still used her OWN name instead of her husband's, she was crucified for it. So she does her hair and dresses in designer suits, because her hairstyle and pantsuits have been criticized ad infinitum. She probably still does not bake cookies, but she tries to portray herself as a grandma like any other. She parses her words and adjusts her voice.

If there is anything inauthentic about Hillary, it's because we made her so.

Watching the GOP go after Obama for the past eight years has convinced me that is an important character trait.
